please help...5 week old started to cry n scream at breast..
« on: March 19, 2008, 20:31:02 pm »
over the last 2 days my 5 and a half week old daughter has started to cry n scream when on the breast in the late afternoon/evening. I am finding it very distressing. She will want food and will start to feed and then bingo ...pulls off feeds cries..screams...gets so excited and tries to feed again and the cycle continues....She would have fed on and off that day for a few hours so guessing she is having a growth spurt..

My boobs feel empty as they have for the last few weeks so i think its that I dont have enough milk........

our boobs wont always feel full even though we have decent supply i do know that much there are a few different reasons your lo could be crying i know there are a few posts here in the form about it but I got cross eyed before i could find to much but know i have read a few post because my lo was a fussy feeder

I believe theres some info in FAQ and reasons can vary from heavy letdown to reflux with a few things in between like inbalanced supply, slight lactose intolerence, just needing a good poop, and the list goes on finding the issue with my lo really was trial and error most of the other moms are way more knowledgeable than me but do check back threw the forums here there is a wealth of info shared by the knowledgeable ladies

happy feeding vibes for you and your lo

My little one started doing the same thing right around the same age! And it was driving me crazy. Poor thing wanted to eat but would scream and push away, or gurgle and choke while trying to swallow.  Almost was like her breathing was 'off' - she couldn't coordinate breathing with sucking/swallowing. Didn't know about the BW forums then...and wish I had!

Two thoughts:

1) I've now realized that when my LO does this it's because she's overtired. Usually because schedule has been thrown off (by a too-short nap or otherwise), so there was A before the E.  In my case, I think this may be exacerbated by her dealing with a fast let-down and flow. Now, whenever this happens - which thankfully is not very often anymore, since I've gotten better at reading her signs - I just put her straight to bed for either a nap or the night depending on the time.

2) My daughter was also diagnosed around the same time with reflux - she was a somewhat silent refluxer so was in pain even though she wouldn't always spit up. (This was evidenced by the pediatrician's examination of her throat which was red at the back.) Ped thus prescribed a medication for motility as well as an acid blocker, and both seemed to help quite a bit. In fact, now at 3.5 months, she's only on the acid blocker and seems pretty happy.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,
Katherine

My daughter did that too and the lactation consultant said it was probably a fast letdown.  I also noticed that it happens when my daughter has a stuffy nose...  BW says that if the baby is seeming too stressed to eat, then put your pinky in their mouth to "remind" them how to suck so they can calm down and latch on properly if they're over hungry.
