lost sucking power!!!
« on: March 19, 2008, 22:32:41 pm »
my son has stopped sucking on his bottle as he usually does... he has always been a good latch and sucker but in the last few days he has been sucking in air as he eats.  he doesn't have the same latch on on the bottle...

what is this?

he is three months next week and has been bottle fed since birth.  we tried a different nipple but any other suggested nipples are welcome... we have been using the NUK gerber nipple... lesigh...

Well, my guess is that his sucking reflex is going away. Happens around 3 to 4 months. So with the sucking reflux they will turn and "suck" on anything, a finger, etc... and the suck is more reflexive and involuntary when the reflex is observed. Then at 3 to 4 months it is normal for that sucking reflex to disappear, and then volitional sucking takes it's place, meaning the baby learns how to use his muscles to make himself suck in a voluntary way. Most babies make this transition without difficulty, some babies have a bit of a harder time. Is he still taking in the same amount, or has that changed? I would suggest trying a nipple that is wider at the base, so that it fills more of his mouth (avent for example) and see how that goes. HTH

he will take more food ... But I think thats cause he is getting bigger... could I be feeding him too much so he isn't really hungry?  and thus does not want to suck as hard on the nipple???

That could also contribute. How often does he eat? Maybe he is ready to stretch between feedings a bit...

It could also be teething.  Sometimes their suck changes when their gums are sore.  Have you tried the teething gel?  I've heard that the orthodontic shape nipples are more comfortable for teething.  Meghan wouldn't take them, but that might be worth a try.

wow - I just started looking for info on this same issue and my little one is 12 weeks - will be three months on the 6th of april.  He just started this weird sucking thing (or should I say lack of suck) two days ago.  Was trying not to pay too much attention to it but he is doing it alot now.

trying to find a good way to explain it but seems like he is sucking and then lets his mouth go loose - and like you mentioned, sounds like he is sucking alot of air.

How long would you say they will go on like this before they take up sucking correctly again?
