Ever okay not to extend a nap?
« on: April 15, 2008, 19:57:28 pm »
My barely 6 month has had three 45 minute naps today and I've had to pupd trying to extend all of them.  It's time for his last nap and he's already overtired and I'm exhausted from all the pupd.  Is it ever okay not to try to pupd to extend a nap?  Will it wreck him?  We're on day 11 of the "training program" and the day was off from the first nap.  I just want to put him in the car and drive him to sleep b/c if I have to pu/pd one more time I'm going to vomit.  I know I can start fresh tomorrow..  Do any of you ever just get them up after a short nap rather than trying to extend it?

IMO, I would only try to extend for about 10-20 min and only if ds wakes crying and clearly tired.  Otherwise, I would go on with my day and try to fit in another nap or early bedtime.  Maybe it's b/c of mommy guilt (for neglecting dd) or b/c ds wakes up happy, I try not to stress myself too much about the length of the naps but the overall total amount of sleep.  Looking back, I think that it worked out well with us as ds is able to sleep on the go whereas dd will only nap in her crib.

Also, I have more success extending the naps with pat/hum at that age.  PU/PD never works well for us.  HTH
