How to get a nap when Ben pirouettes round cot!
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:28:40 am »
Hi

Well, naps have been going better, swaddling Ben's arms in swaddle blanket, dark room, hand on head helps him go down if you catch the window. However, Ben is 20 weeks now and he is moving so much he could strangle himself in the swaddle blanket (long end). I therefore feel I can no longer swaddle him (also don't want him to get too hot). Will have to get cot bumpers so he doesn't hurt himself on sides of cot, hitting head or getting legs trapped. I have blackout blinds that velcro over window but having to leave a bit open so can open window for ventilation.

Anyone else had this difficulty? Any suggestions? Just when we had a formula that worked!....

((Hugs))

Does he sleep with a blanket tucked over him and into sides of cot?  This kept DD1 from moving around and meant we could continue to swaddle.

Also, you do get sleeping bags with little pockets inside for swaddling arms.  I know someone has mentioned them on here before.

Thanks for your reply.

He normally only has the swaddle in the day so he doesn't get too hot. I will see if I can tuck him in with a blanket. This might do instead of the swaddle as he might be happier with fists to chew, now he is more used to going down for naps and does not go SO mad!

I have found a site in New Zealand that does 'Airwrap' - breatheable mesh instead of cot bumpers which protects little ones from getting hands/feet caught in bars but can be used for 2 years as the baby cannot use it as leverage to get out of the cot. They are on order!

I cannot believe how mobile Ben is in his cot - I was SO looking forward to him moving around, and now  he is......!

Thanks,

Hi Nicola

Just to update you, tucking him into a sheet stops him moving around so much. Now I am working on getting him to nap 'swaddle-less' and will try persistently for a week or so before deciding whether to give in and go back to swaddling. Today he has had two naps so far of 45 and 30 minutes. He will only go down with me comforting him and holding his arms down. He then wakes himself a number of times and I hear cries that die off, before waking himself for good. I don't have patience or confidence enough in it to spend too long trying to extend him naps. I just hope as he gets more comfortable without the swaddle he will do so?!.....
