early wakings for 23 month old?!
« on: May 02, 2008, 11:08:43 am »
Hi, my fabulous 23 ds has suddenly decided that 6am or earlier is the way to go!  this has been going on now for a couple of weeks.  he rarely did 12 hrs at night in the past but usually 11hrs.  I have tried a slightly later bedtime but that dosen't increase total sleep time just adds on in the am.  I am wondering if i need to decrease his nap at all to get longer night times?  he may be teething but would that cause ew's... sleep is not affected anywhere else?
he naps from 12:15-2:15 (sometimes a little longer but i never let him go longer than 2.5 hrs)
lights out at 7:30pm and he is asleep at 8pm (video monitor) and wakes at 6am.
any ideas as to what is going on and what i can do for a later am?  w2s does not work over here!
thanks and any suggestions  are very welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there, I just wanted to say I think teething can cause EWs, I think the niggling pain after a nights worth of sleep is enough to wake them and start their day. Leorah 's EWs when teething rectify as soon as the teething stops.

I always love that pic of your DS  :)

Teething certainly can cause early wakings. Could also be because the nap is too long. Isabella at around age 2 went from 2hr nap to 1.5 and nights were down to 10.5hrs

So you could try riding it out if its teeth or perhaps its time to cut the nap down?!?

I thought teething might cause ew, but i thought they would also come with nw's.  i hope it is the teeth (not so much for him though) and that those suckers come out soon!  less pain for ds and more sleep for mummy!

ok, so how long do these molars take to come out typically??!?!?!?!?!?
Ds woke at 5:50am today but then slept in my arms from 6-6:50am.

Actually dd1 hasn't got her 2nd round of molars yet... and neither does #2. I can't remember how long it takes for them to come through... maybe a few weeks to a month :-\.

Is he still sleeping around 2-2.5hrs during the day? Could it be too much daytime sleep? Do you pick him up straight away? Maybe try leaving him in the cot and see if he will fall back asleep on his own? If you intervene too early, he might get used to it and he'll start waking out of habit.

Can i Join you on the quest for the early morning wakeup answer!!!!?? Please!!!???

Oliverrowland you described my lovely lo to a tee!!!  Yesterday it was 5am and his first Hudini escape from his cotwith a thud :o!! and this morning it was 520 and i am at my wit's end! Our routine is more or less the same as yours but letting him sleep only 1 - 11/2 hours still hasn't sorted him out.  Any suggestions please?

thank you

Debbie

Debbie, he sleeps 11 hrs at night?

I am thinking we are going to have to just wait it out over here...that it actually is teething.  poor ds has a penile infection so has been on antibiotics and motrin/tylenol.  both mornings on pain meds he has woken after 6:30....so it must be helping the teethng discomfort as well.  I suppose one could experiment with motrin (only lasts 8 hrs but may help?!) for one night to rule out teething?

Hi there,

we're actually only sleeping 10ish hours from 7 -730 til 5.......ughhhhhhh, it was 5 again this morning.  I let him sleep from 1230 until 345 this afternoon and then ended up waking him up. It's my b/day today so we went out for dinner and he asked to go to bed at 8pm!! :o ;) which gobsmacked me...so we'll see what happens in the morning.  I do wonder if it's his teeth, who knows??!!

I'm sorry to hear your lo has an infection, not nice, poor little poppet.  Hope he gets well soon.

how did he do with a later bedtime?  we pushed our bedtime 15 more minutes to push am wake up...it helped a bit.  we also moved nap a bit earlier as he seemed a bit cranky later morning being awake for so long.

how's your lo's infection?
