Start 2:1 switch now before DS starts daycare in August?
« on: June 02, 2008, 18:41:55 pm »
My DS will be 13 months this week.  He takes 2 naps a day... one around 9:00 and one around 1:30, and they vary from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours, depending on whether he is at home or at the sitters, whether he's teething, whether his allergies are bothering him, whether it's sunny in China, or whatever.  Consistency is not his strong suit, if you get my drift...  Anyway, my question is this:  He starts at a "real" day care (3 days a week) the second week of August, so he will have just turned 15 months old.  At the school in the room he'll be in, they only get one nap a day and it starts at 12:30.  The kids there supposedly all sleep from 12:30 to 2 or 2:30.  Do I/we start transistioning him to one nap a day now, 2 months before he is forced into that schedule, even though he's likely not ready?  He's at an "in-home" type day care setting right now for 3 days a week.

In my humble opinion I would wait to transition him. When my son went to daycare at 12 months he was a two nap a day kid too but they transitioned him for me which worked out well for all involved I think. I was worried that he wouldn't handle it but  he did okay. Your son may be more ready at 15 months and it may be a pretty easy transition for him then.  Of course if he shows like he may transition before then maybe you could begin the process.

Funny thing is, my 13 month old daughter is going through the transition now and I'm finding it so difficult since daycare did it so efficiently with my son the first time. My daughter is at home with me. It's painful.

Funny, I was just replying to the thread you started regarding the troubles you've been having with your DD...

I may talk to the sitter tomorrow and see what she thinks about starting the transition before he leaves her house.  Ugh!  I don't want to make the wrong decision and end up with a super cranky baby if I can avoid it!

I would delay the transition as long as possible - trying to push into it too soon is likely to make for a very OT LO.   he may do it himself between now and then anyway - when it happens it happens quite quickly!
