Solids causing diaper rash?
« on: June 04, 2008, 02:52:41 am »
My 5 month old daughter has been eating rice cereal for the past two weeks. I started her on peas 3 days ago. I don't know if it's a concidence or a reaction but the past three days she has also been having runny poops (sorry, TMI) and a horrible diaper rash. I stopped the peas after two days and she just won't have anything to do with her rice cereal now. Her formula consumption has also decreased a bit. To tell you the truth, the whole EASY plan has been off kilter for us since she came down with this issue. Poor thing, she really looks uncomfortable. You can tell when she's peeing or pooping because her legs pull up and she grimaces. It must hurt her coming out.
So my question is, should I stop all solids for a week or two until this gets sorted? Do you think it was the peas that caused this reaction?

Hello! Sorry your lo is feeling poorly :(

As she is only 5 months, it won't hurt to stop all solid foods until she is feeling totally better, and then reintroduce them and see whether something similar happens? Milk is her most important source of nutrition until 12 months, so she's got plenty of time to get started with solid foods.

Tbh it is always difficult to work out the cause of runny poos and sore bottoms, there are so many thing that can contribute to it, like teething, but stopping, then reintroducing the solid food will give you some idea if there is a link :)

My little guy had the similiar thing happen to him when he was around 6mos of age. It was horrible. He had the runs for about 5 days and his diaper rash was so bad that his skin was blistering and peeling. He would scream crying whenever he peed or pooped.
What I did, was stop solid feeding until he got better from the runs. Then any chance I got I would lye him on a blanket naked from the waist down to let the diaper rash breathe and try to heal. When he did have to where a diaper I would use sudocreme (diaper rash cream) Its amazing stuff.
I wish you all the best. I hope you LO gets better. Tracey

It sounds very likely that it was the peas, but the best way to tell is to stop them till all clears up and try again.  I agree with the pp about letting your lo's skin get as much air as possible.  I have never heard of sudocreme, what my son's doc recommends is Calmoseptine.  It's not prescription but you do have to ask for it at the pharmacy counter.  For us, that was the best.  A little pricey but totally worth it, and a little goes a long way.  Good luck, hope things get better soon.
