Milk first or food first?
« on: June 11, 2008, 05:23:27 am »
Hi! My DD is 5.5 months old now, and we're going to have solid food soon!

I find different people teaching me different things and I'm confused.  ???
Even Tracy's book and this forum seems to be different?

There are 2 sayings:
(A) During each meal, feed the baby with solid food first,
maybe 1-2 teaspoons when he's only 6 months old,
then give him milk until he's full.
(B) During each meal, feed the baby with milk first, until he's full,
then give him solid food, for fun, and see this as the beginning of "A" time.

Which is correct?
And if I misunderstood anything, please correct me.
Thank you!

Icy

Hi Icy :D

As you know BW recommends doing things the second way :) Until LO's are about 1 year old, nutrition comes from BM or formula and food is just for fun.  This is why Tracy recommends it should form part of A time rather than E time.

Many babies also love solids and begin to fill up on them, not leaving enough room for enough milk.  My DD1 took to solids great and was on 3 good meals a day but still had plenty milk.  DD2 on the other hand would leave milk for solids so we are careful to make solids A time and to find a balance, ensuring she is hungry for milk ;)

Thank you Nicola!  :)

I found this sample routine in the FAQ section:
Quote (selected)
4 Milkfeeds during the day (6-8+ months).

7am - Milk
8am - Solids
11am - Milk
12pm - Solids
3pm - Milk
4/4.30pm - Solids
6.30pm - Milk
10.30pm - D/F if still doing one

I am confused again.
Should we give solid food immediately after milk?
Or should we wait for an hour (as in the above sample routine)?
Would this make the baby "snacking" (eat a little bit for many times)?

Sorry,

I misread a bit of your original post and didn't see the part that said 'give solids after milk and see this as the beginning of A time'.  I would be following the sample routine.  For us, solids form part of A time, but don't start it off.  Actually at 8 months our routine is exactly the same as the one you posted :)
