so he was fine and didn't crawl off it and want to leave his room at all???  That is my fear as ds opens doors really well and if he can't get it open he freaks!  I have tried a few times to put him on someone's bed while we are visiting, camping, etc but he won't do it.  Once i put him down, off he goes!  I have to hold him/rock him if we are out in places like that.  The only other places he is fine sleeping at is both grandparents as he has a play pen at those places.  i think it will be quite the challange and i will leave it till he either is older and understands he must stay in his bed or he just out grows his crib!

Betty
We only got rid of her dummy about a month ago so she was almost three!!We did cold turkey with Sasha as she was only having it for sleep but was asking for it more and more during the day.She doesn't do very well with gradual withdrawal so cold turkey was best for her.
We talked about it loads a few days before taking it away and that the dummy fairy would leave her a present. On the day we buried it under a plant in a pot so she could be involved etc.
When it was time for bed I followed her normal routine and fully expected there to be tears when i left the room.but she was fine and just took a little longer to fall asleep. When she woke at night we just would go into her room kiss her and tuck her back in and that was all she needed.
The dummy fairy worked well for us probably because of her age and what she is able to understand!!

In regards to the big boy bed, he definitely did get off his bed for the first few days (we started by just putting the mattress on the floor - but he can't open his door yet and is used to sleeping with it closed, so that was probably a huge help.  Bed time was much easier as he mainly just stayed in bed, but for the first two nights when he finally went to sleep (it took a while initially) we found him sleeping on the floor near the door.  After that he just stayed in bed.  Naptimes were a whole different kettle of fish though - because his room was much lighter he would get up and play.  I fully anticipated him exploring his newfound freedom though and thankfully it only lasted a few days.  He would still eventually go to sleep in his bed, but would just play for a while first.  If he didn't want to go to sleep, he would just call out and bang on his door.  About 3 days later, that all stopped and he has always just stayed in bed since then.  He has always been a really adaptable baby/kid, so that probably helped us greatly.  If there is no reason for you to go to the big boy bed just yet, I definitely wouldn't, as it isn't always so easy...  You are like me with the paci, have had a little taste of what it would be like and are not so keen to rush into it :D
