concerned about gain
« on: June 12, 2008, 01:20:25 am »
DD is 10 wks old and was gaining really well for a while, but in the past 3 wks not so.....in 2 wks she only gained 2 oz, then only 1.5 oz the next week.   She also seems to not feed very well, or very long (I've always thought so but she was gaining so well I didn't worry).

Do you think she's just slowing down? They can't gain at a super rate forever, but it seems so little.......We've both been on meds for thrush the past 5 wks though, so maybe it reduced appetite or supply??

Are you weighing her every week?  That will make you crazy!  I'd just go by her wet/dirty diapers and how content she seems.  I got into a stage of obsessing about weight gain, and the stress was pointless.  Some babies gain slower, some gain faster.  Nothing to worry about with either type.

That said, if you are really worried, call the pedi and ask what they think.

I agree with pp. I became obsessed with the growth charts with dd and stressed myself out over nothing. The dr. wasn't concerned so I decided to let it go and keep an eye on diapers and overall contentedness/development etc. My dd is a slow gainer but is happy. They also become more efficient at their feedings and take less time to get what they need and are also increasingly distracted by their surroundings during feedings.

thanks--no I've not been weighing her weekly, just she's had 2 doc appts and 1 lactation appt in the psat 3 weeks, so some good data on her gain (or lack of) recently.

Also, She only poos once a week.....it's uncommon I know, but DS did the same. It's normal bf poo, but my ped was surprised (our old ped was not concerned with DS, our new ped wonders why she only poos once a week)...so that's got me a bit concerned, but plenty of wets, which I think is more impt, don't you?

hmm.  I don't know about the poos.  DS did and does go 4-5 times a day.  I would talk to the pedi and ask what he/she thinks.

How many times a day is she eating?

Read this off Kellymom regarding poops.

Some breastfed babies, after the first three to four weeks of life, may suddenly change their stool pattern from many each day, to one every three days or even less. Some babies have gone as long as 15 days or more without a bowel movement. As long as the baby is otherwise well, and the stool is the usual pasty or soft, yellow movement, this is not constipation and is of no concern. No treatment is necessary or desirable, because no treatment is necessary or desirable for something that is normal.

I'd say if it's normal bf baby poop, and not hard pellet like stools then all is well.  Some might even say lucky!   ;)

At her age pooing frequency isn't an issue. It might be that a serious case of thrush has had an effect. If she's had any oral thrush it can make feeding more painful and babies often spend less time on the breast and this can affect your supply as a result. I would try and increase your supply by pumping after some feeds (not much will come out - you are sending signals.)
How often does she feed at the moment? Does she seem satisfied after feeds? Wet nappies?

Thanks for all the feedback.  She has plenty of wets per day, and her poos are definitely normal in appearance.  I could not believe I'd have another once a week pooper, since I lucked out that way with DS.

She's on a 3 hr EASY w/ df (but doesn't take much at it) but has been sleeping through most days since about 6 wks old (before that only 1 night feed since birth) again--lucky  me!, but if she woke early, I had been putting her back to sleep pretty easily, today she woke at 5, so I fed her, because I'm concerned she's not eating enough.  She usually stops a feed herself--gets lazy and starts non-nutrative sucking, not sleepy, just disinterested and either pulls off herself, or after a few min of non-nut I take her off, burp, offer again, and if no real sucking end the feed.  I've still been one side feeding, but I don't think she's emptying the breast.  Should I offer the other side anyway, just in case?

thanks to you all!
Sarah

Do you do breast compressions? Great way of getting that extra bit of gold-top into them  :P
