2 week old alert for Nap times
« on: August 12, 2008, 18:44:08 pm »
I have a 2 wek old baby girl who I can't seem to get to go down for naps unless I hold and gently rock her. We watch for her sleep window, and then swaddle her and have quiet time for 5 - 10 minutes and then put her in her crib but we can't seem to get her to sleep once she is in her crib. Oh, and we give her a soother as well, which sometimes she likes and sometimes will have nothing to do with it. She is not upset when we put her down, just awake and looking around. If we leave the room she gets upset, and if she stays awake in the crib for too long she will start to get upset, probably because she is getting overtired. Shh-pat doesn't really seem appropriate as she is not crying or anything, and when we do try it, it doesn't seem to do anything.  She goes to sleep great at night after eating, but I think that is mainly because she has no real awake time, so she just falls asleep right after eating. I hold her for a few minutes after she is done, and then put her back in her crib.

Ocassionally we will get her to sleep in her crib, and I stay with her for 20 minutes to make sure that she is asleep, but then she wakes up 10 minutes later. I always burp her for 10 minutes after she eats, and I have elevated her crib mattress incase it is gas that is waking her up.

Any advice would be truly appreciated!

Hi,

I don't want to discourage you from trying to encourage independent sleep, but our lo (DS2) didn't do too well with it at that age at all, and is barely doing well with it now at 6 weeks.  Have you tried helping her get a little drowsy first, by patting her back while she's on your shoulder?  Or walk around while you sing some songs til she's pretty drowsy and then lay her down?  FYI, I didn't discover BW until DD1 was 2.5 months old and she learned to sleep independently even after being jiggled and bounced before we trained her.  In my opinion, it's better to establish good sleep patterns to start, then work on the how.  Others may disagree though!  Good luck!
