Help with bottles
« on: August 07, 2008, 08:27:14 am »
Hi all, my dd has recently weaned from the breast and I was using the breastflow bottles, but the flow became too slow for her (even on the fastest teat) and she was getting frustrated. Switched to DR B which I had in the cupboard, but now she will only drink to assuage her thirst and then she stops and NOTHING will get her going again, so all she takes is 3-4 oz and then cries if I go near her with the bottle.

Have tried a faster flow teat but no difference except it comes out of her mouth at the speed it is going in.

Can anyone recommend a bottle, or does anyone have any experience with this - driving DH mad with my indecision over this.  ::)

I believe the Avent bottles are quiet good for breastfeed babies.

Hi,
(DH's just dont understand the frustration as much, nor the fact that the bottles amongst other things can cause the problems).
I use Avent bottles and they seem to be fine for my lo, did question them at one point but no they are good.
You can adjust the flow also by the tightening of the lid on bottle. Do you know what flow your let down/ breast milk was at? could try mirroring it with a flow. Sometimes the ages for the teat flow dont mean that its right for your lo. Maybe the next flow up is too much & next one down not enough? If you dont want to buy new teats try sterilising a needle under hot water & pierce either another hole or make an existing hole bigger-that might work.
Also could look into wether your lo has a physical reason as to why she doesnt like the bottle? have heard of tongue tie or similar things that can cause a problem but not sure if there would/should be a problem with breast feeding if a condition exists?
Dont know at what age the move from a bottle to a sippy cup or similar but could look into that too????
Hope it works out soon

How often does she feed?? Are you sure shes not just had enough? If she feeds regularly then this maybe the answer, my little boy is a tad younger and he drinks 7oz 4 hourly, so if she was drinking 3/4oz more regularly it may just be that shes
had enough?

Finn like to have a break after 4 oz, no idea why! Just about 15 minutes then he'll happily finish the rest off!!

He has Dr Browns and is on teat size 2, 3 is WAY too fast!! What teat is she on? Is she getting tired or frustrated with the flow?

No other ideas but hope you suss it out!!! xxxx

Have to confess I switched bottles again to MAM, and these seem to work better for her, have started off on the medium flow but will try the faster flow today, I agree with you that a break of 15 mins or so often works wonders, aren't they funny, I guess they just get tired sucking. She drinks four hourly but rarely will take more than 5oz, although occasionally 8!!! I guess I just have to go with it.
