frozen milk
« on: August 20, 2008, 12:28:54 pm »
My son is 13 weeks old.  I have been pumping exclusively since he was 3 weeks.  He now takes 4-4.5 oz every 3 hours and sleeps through the night.  I currently pump for 10 min every 4 hours starting at 6 am and ending at 10 pm.  It seems each breast produces about an oz an hour so I have a lot of milk stored in the deep freezer.  I planned to pump for 6 months and then feed him the frozen milk for as long as it lasts.  I read milk is made for what he needs now but will it be okay to feed it to him later?  Would mixing the frozen milk with formula help with any nutrients that may be lost during the storage time?  I have tried to research this but have not been unable to locate any helpful information.  Please help.

HHHHUUUUMMMMM! Geez, not sure what to say. I would be tempted to say that one of the main advantages of BM is for sure the nutrients (which formula is not far from) and antibodies. But don't know what happens to those when the milk is frozen .

I think "rotating" your milk could be a good idea, give fresh  and unfrozen milk daily could be an answer? I am not sure milk stays good for more then 3 months in the freezer- should check. And OH! a friend of mine lost a whole bunch of milk during a electric problem at her house ... she was in tears!

{{hugs}}  That's quite a commitment to exclusively pump!  Good for you, giving the best for your ds (dear son).

There is some loss in nutrients/antibodies over time, but frozen milk is still preferable to formula, from what I understand.

I always fed fresh/refridgerated if that was available, and then fed frozen, starting with the oldest I had.

This site has some info on storing milk (scroll down).  http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/tips-and-solutions/11/breastmilk-collection-and-storage  In the chart, "self-contained refrigerator freezer unit" means that you have 2 doors on your fridge (side by side or top/bottom).  Some older units had you open a single fridge door, & the freezer was a little box in the fridge itself; since those were open to room air more often, the milk wouldn't keep as long in those.  There isn't a column for that type on the chart.  Deep freezer means a separate machine.

Hope something in that helps.  :)
