NW's in 2.5yr old - suggestions please!
« on: January 08, 2009, 13:53:47 pm »
Hi all,

We are having real problems at the moment with our 2.5 yr old son.  He had an ear infection early December and since then he's been having about 5 NW per night.  These range from just having to go in and pat him through to full on hour long battles where he is asking for milk, saying he is scared, wanting to come into our room and wanting us to sleep on his floor.

To be honest, he has never been able to fall asleep on his own - we have always held him to go to sleep - this was mainly due to the fact he had reflux and would often projectile vomit after his last feed and it has become a habit  :-[

We are also never been a good napper, and is currently fighting daytime sleep to the point where a few times a week he will not nap at all.

His schedule looks like this:-

07:00   Awake - can't entertain himself in cot - once he's awake, we're all up!
08:00  Breakfast
12:00  Lunch
13:00  Try for nap - sometimes will sleep for about an hour - other times no nap
17:00   Dinner
19:30  Go up for bath
20:00   Last milk - normally takes about 45 mins to get to sleep - generally asleep by 21:00, sometimes not until 21:30.

He will generally sleep okay until about 01:00 and then the wakings begin.  He will cry out for Mummy or Daddy and we have to go in and settle him down.  Like I say, can range from a back pat to a full on 2 hour job!!  This will be through until about 05:30 a.m. and he will then generally sleep until about 07:00........

I am sure he is overtired as he has redness under his eyes, but he fights sleep so much!!

Any help on the overtiredness and the schedule would be great - also advice on WI/WO and how to get him to settle himself to sleep.  I really envy people who can just put little one in the cot and they will have a little chat to themselves and then drift off to sleep.

Thanks sooo much in advance.

I think the first thing I'd tackle is the very late bedtime he has - if he's not going to sleep until 9pm, then he's likely to be chronically overtired. At that age, I found my son having many more nightwakings if I didn't get him to bed before around 7pm.

He will no doubt protest ;), but it will be worth it. If you feel you will struggle with wi/wo, then perhaps you could try gradual withdrawal instead. Here's a link to help you decide http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80750.0

agree and his nap seems a bit late as well - 6hr A time. I know some kids like that but if he is OT he will need to ctach-up.

Also he is old enough to tell you if he is sleepy, does he say anything about feeling sleepy? I started aksing DS and often he will say yes, but sometimes he will sya no, but if I can sense his nee dto sleep and I start the wind down routine he will admit to being sleepy.

he normally says no if he is excited about a new toy or DH being home at the time and so on.
9 and 6, oh boy!

just a thought...does he fall asleep in the car before his normal nap time? my ds is a chronic early waker (5am average) and for the longest time, i kept putting him down for his nap at 1pm. when i discovered that if we were in the car at 10am, he would consistantly fall asleep, i decided to move his nap earlier. not only did he fall asleep easier at that time, but he also took a longer nap! (for the most part) the earlier nap also made it easier for me to push his bedtime back a bit so that he was going to bed an hour ealier, but still waking up at 5

HTH!
