Transition into Big Boy Bed
« on: August 30, 2008, 00:48:41 am »
My son is 2.5 and we are expecting our 2nd baby in a month. We transitioned our son into a new room into a real bed. WE made it exciting for him, he got to pick out the bedding and the accessories. Its a really cool room and he loves to show people that come over. He used to be so easy to put down. Bath, Books, and then I would put him in his crib awake, say goodnight and shut the door and not hear a peep until 11 hours later. Now that has all changed. He cries for 30-60 minutes in his bed unless I lay next to him until he falls asleep. He gets up a couple times a night and I have to go in and settle him down. And he wakes up an hour earlier than he used to. At first I thought this was just at the beginning, but its been about 3 weeks and still the same scenario. He is exhausted and acting grumpy and crying in the mornings. Naptime is also a bear - same troubles. He used to be the best napper. Drop him in his crib at 12:30 and he would sleep until 3 every single day. Now - i'm lucky to get an hour out of him. Can I expect this to get better? What should I do differently?

Ryan used to call out for us a lot when he first went into a bed at around 2 yrs 8 months. We had to do a lot of up and down the stairs for a bit just being quite firm, opening the door but not going in.  We did have to resort to threatening to take his fav toy away unless he went to sleep. After a while things got better and now he is fine.  Sometimes we get the 'I want you up here Mummy' but we are just firm and explain it is sleep time. I think thats all you can do really.
