11mo old teething and waking up
« on: September 23, 2008, 17:37:55 pm »
My ds is teething.  He has 3 coming in right now.  He is starting to wake up at night again.  He has never been a great sleeper but we have only had EW to deal with for a few weeks now.  But, now he is teething and I don't know how to handle it.  I want to give him all the comfort he needs but at the same time so fearful that I am going to create a bad habit.  Then, I'll be posting on the 'Back on Track' section.  So, wanted to get advice as to not start our old NWs again.  He did wake last night at midnight and I gave him Motrin and rocked him for a while then put him back when he was relaxed.  Then he woke up at our usual 5:00.  I know he doesn't feel good but don't want to overdo it and get us in trouble again.

Hugs- I was told to help them deal with the pain anyway you can, then get them back on track later... they need to know you're there when they feel icky...
Sounds like you're doing fine, you're not up rocking him to sleep all night. Is he going down okay for naps?

J just had 4 molars come through, complete with nw's so I feel your pain! It lasted about a week then he settled down.

There isnt an awful lot you can do when they're in pain other than medicate and get them back to sleep asap to avoid the build-up of OT. What I did was give him neurofen at bedtime, then when he woke in the early hours i'd put Anbesol on his gums straight away (a teething liquid, you can used gel or suchlike), then gave him a dose of Calpol and a drink of water from his sippy if he wanted it, then he would go back to sleep. I found if I didn't act immediately he would get OT very quick and be awake for hours  ::)

When the teething has passed you can then use wi/wo if the nw's become habit etc, although that didn't happen here thankfully.

Moving this to NW's btw  :-*

((Hugs))

DD2 is having NW's due to teething too.  She is 11 months old as well :)

I gave nurofen before bed, bonjela and some calpol if she wakes.  I then give her a cuddle to soothe her and usually pop her back into cot.  Occasionally I hold her longer until she is sleeping, it just depends.

The key is to offer extra love and cuddles whilst sticking as near to your routine/rituals as possible.

Personally, I take the time to enjoy the night snuggles right now! It's the only time I get to cuddle her for that long ;)

The naps have been affected.  He goes to daycare and he has difficulty napping with distractions.  He is very touchy and makes it more difficult. But, yesterday he napped a 30 min nap in morning and 30 min in the afternoon. Yikes!!!!!  I put him to bed at 6:30 instead of 7:00. So, he is totally OT.  He had a major meltdown today. He napped a 15 min, 50min and 45min today.  Better than yesterday but still  horrible for him.  I put him to bed at 6:20 tonight.  We already have EW and this is all quickly becoming a nightmare.  Hopefully things will go back to normal soon.

Oh ((Hugs)) to you.

Sounds like like he is in a bit of an OT cycle. I would bring bedtime forward to around 6pm and let him catch up.
