Baby at 11 weeks rejecting breastfeeding.
« on: September 16, 2008, 22:44:11 pm »
My LO has started to refuse my breast, so im having to express most of her feeds.  to cut a long story short - ive been giving my lo the last two feeds at night by bottle (expressed milk) 7.30 cluster feed & the 10.30 dreamfed.  if im out shopping or have to go anywhere i would give her a feed by bottle also once or twice a week (as i find it hard to get places to breastfeed where i live).
1st feed in the morning at 7am she takes my breast but later in the day feeds she rejects me, today for instance:
7am she feed for 5-6mins on RB
10am she wouldn't feed (fighting me off & crying)
1pm she feed for a short time (4mins then came off) then took 3oz i had expressed earlier.
4pm feed for a very short time (3 - 4 mins same thing came off crying) then give her 3oz by expressed.
7.30 expressed feed 6oz
10.30 expressed feed 5oz (dreamfeed)
my question is - is my lo getting to use to the bottle?
im worried that shes not getting enough if i don't give her expressed by bottle.  she loves the expressed bottle feeds, she gets so excited when she sees the bottle.
im unsure if i can keep expressing every feed - its very hard work), all i seem to do the past few days is express, feed, wash, sterlize, express, feed, wash, sterlize which takes all day - is there a faster way?
i know i have posted a lot of concerns but i need your help.
thank you.  ??? :'(

My LO started to get fussy BFing around 4 months I believe.
She has GERD/Reflux and for some reason it was really bothering her then.

Am feed she was usually fine & then the rest of feeds throughout day were hit or miss. She would latch on & pull off crying a few mins later. It probably happened for a week before I called Ped. I opted to not have her take meds as she was gaining weight fine. She stopped doing it as much after a few weeks.

How long has your LO been doing this? Have you tried changing positions?

What are you sterilizing each time? I give it up to those moms that feed EBM. I was so tired that I gave up on it unless I knew Id be skipping a nursing during the day.

Hi cmg & hugs xxx

I don't know anything about reflux so i can't comment on that but some thing that you mentioned and what i think is the cause of a lot of these problems is bottle prefference. The milk flows much quicker from the bottle than the boob.

Theres a few things that you can do to help prevent it:

1) Have you tried switching sides before giving the bottle? You can do this as many times as she will let you.

2) If you can't get her to switch sides you could try moving feeds closer together. Have you tried EAEAS for a few days to get her to take more (this really helped me).

3) If using a bottle make sure that the bottle teat that you are using is for 1st newborns. This will make it harder for her to get the milk.

4) If you want to try a bottle more suited to breast feeding then you could try the 'Harberman Feeder' or the cheeper option 'Breastflow' bottles links are below. I use the latter and they work great:

Hope some of this can help you out

My baby did the same thing at about 3.5 mo. she would feed fine in am, then the rest of the day was a constant struggle: I want her to latch, she doesn't, we switch sides, we walk, we pat, we cry (both of us...) this thing lasted really bad for about 3-4 days, then got somewhat better but then became somewhat bad again. I know it's hard, but don't get too emotional and frustrated - you are not a failure and your baby will live. I discovered that my baby nurses better when my breast is full - let down happens fasted and the flow is better.  I actually started to take fenugreek just to boost my milk production.
So now my baby is 4 mo, she is not the chubbiest baby in the world, but she is happy and looks healthy.
Don't get discouraged, it sounds like most babies go through this stage at about 4 mo. and don't take breast rejection personally!
