Daytime Sleep Questions
« on: September 14, 2008, 21:01:59 pm »
My baby is 11 weeks old.  Baby sleeps very well from dreamfeed (10-11pm) to 6/7am.  However, baby sleeps rarely during the day.  Maybe 3 naps 20-30 mins.   My question is ...  when baby is due to sleep during the day, should it be in the same nighttime cot upstairs, or could it be in a crib/basket downstairs?  Does the location matter?

hi
at 11 weeks he should be getting 3 naps of 1.5 hours and 1 nap of 45 min.  he is very low on daytime sleep for this age.  you're lucky he's sleeping so well at night!! often when babies are OT they sleep worse at night.

for naps it doesn't so much matter the location.  if you have an area dowanstairs that is quiet and dark that should be fine.  the more important thing is the consistency.  if he knows he sleeps at night upstairs and during the day you have winddown and put in cot downstairs it should be fine.

30 min naps mean he is OT.  try putting him dow nearlier.  at 11 weeks max A time should be 1.5 hours first thing and after a long nap, and only 1 hour after a 30 min nap.  you are probably keeping him up too long.

Re: baby at 11 weeks rejecting breastfeeding.

Thank you for your response.
i'll keep trying with the long naps.  so you reckon i should feed, activity for 1.5 hours then a long nap.  if lo only sleeps 30 mins she should only get 1 hour activity time?  is this correct.
it took me 1 hour today to get my lo to have a nap & the nap was shorter (30 mins nap, shorter than getting her to sleep).
another concern i have - my lo has started to refuse my breast, so im having to express most of her feeds.  to cut a long story short - ive been giving my lo the last two feeds at night by bottle (expressed milk) 7.30 cluster feed & the 10.30 dreamfed.  if im out shopping or have to go anywhere i would give her a feed by bottle also once or twice a week (as i find it hard to get places to breastfeed where i live).
1st feed in the morning at 7am she takes my breast but later in the day feeds she rejects me, today for instance:
7am she feed for 5-6mins on RB
10am she wouldn't feed (fighting me off & crying)
1pm she feed for a short time (4mins then came off) then took 3oz i had expressed earlier.
4pm feed for a very short time (3 - 4 mins same thing came off crying) then give her 3oz by expressed.
7.30 expressed feed 6oz
10.30 expressed feed 5oz (dreamfeed)
my question is - is my lo getting to use to the bottle?
im worried that shes not getting enough if i don't give her expressed by bottle.  she loves the expressed bottle feeds, she gets so excited when she sees the bottle.
im unsure if i can keep expressing every feed - its very hard work), all i seem to do the past few days is express, feed, wash, sterlize, express, feed, wash, sterlize which takes all day - is there a faster way?
i know i have posted a lot of concerns but i need your help.
thank you. ??? :'(

hi
A time is awake time.  it includes all the time baby is awake and includes feeding time and time it takes to fall asleep.  so if she wakes up at 7 am and feeds she should be back asleep for nap 1 at 8:30.

at this age it usually takes babies longer than 5 min to bf...is she snacking?  do you think there's something wrong with your supply?  could she have reflux?

i'm not an expert in bfing, maybe you should post over on the bf board or talk to your doctor.  it doesn't sound right.

we had similar thing happen at 6 mo.  i thought my supply was dwindling so i started supplementing with a bottle after every bf and at night, it took about 2 weeks and she completely switched to bottle feeding and refused the breast.  this was ok with me because i had bf for 6 mo and was ready to wean.  but if you want to continue bfing i think you should be really careful.  she may start to prefer to bottle and reject the breast which may be a problem.
