8 months - wake up every 1.5 hr at night
« on: August 26, 2008, 05:50:05 am »
My DS is now 8 months 1 week old. Serious NW begins a few weeks ago.
I thought it was teething at the beginning.
But after the teeth come out, NW continues, and becoming more serious.
I almost have no sleep!  :-\

His routine is like this: (but things are still changing rapidly)

06:30 wake up (crying)
E 07:00 breastfeed
E 08:15 solid (a few teaspoons) + breastfeed
S 09:30 (maybe 40 min, may also be 1 hr 40 min)

E 11:15 breastfeed
E 13:00 solid (a few teaspoons) + breastfeed
S 14:30 (maybe 40 min, may also be 1 hr 40 min)

E 16:00 breastfeed
E 17:30 solid (a few teaspoons) + breastfeed
A 18:45 bath
E 19:15 breastfeed
S 19:45

1st NW may start at 21:30, but sometimes later, at 23:00.
When NW starts, he wake up every 1.5 hr, can't sleep more than 2 hr.

Sometimes I try PU/PD, etc.  But he cry so hard, then after 10-20 min, I breastfeed him.
Sometimes I just breastfeed him, wish he could go back to sleep quickly, so I can also sleep.

Am I doing things wrongly?
Am I feeding him too much?

I'm thinking it might be separation anxiety, so he can't get back to sleep by himself.
But why did he wake in the first place?
What should I do?

Please help me!  :'(

Hiya ... this sounded exactly like mine a few weeks ago. Also you have a similar routine to us. I think our problem was that DD was OT from lack of consistant sleep at night, we had to break the OT cycle. So we took a real effort to give her a few days of good sleep during the day - we didn't go out, had no visitors etc, kept her A time as gentle and relaxed as podssible and left her to sleep in the daytime naps as long as possible and brought her bedtime earlier if she hadn't had long enough naps - got her to sleep anyway we could - a white noise cd playing on repeat really helped (but we only use it for naps not nightime). Anyway, after a few days she seemed much happy, less whingy and irritable and she now sleeps 1.5-2hrs twice a day and last night woke only twice, I repositioned her and she slept again!
Does he have a dummy/pacifier etc? Do you give him a DF later on at night? Did he used to ba able to self sooth to sleep?
Don't know if this will help at all, but someone will definately have better advice than me with more experience to offer.
Good luck and hugs as I know how hard it is with no sleep. Last night was my best night for one and a half months ... it does get better!

Thank you so much!

Yes! "OT from lack of consistant sleep at night, we had to break the OT cycle"
I never think this way before.
I definitely will try your suggestion.

Just want to agree with mini me, I think perhaps his bedtime might be a little too late? EASY works best on a 12 hour day/12 hour night.

This could definitely be adding to the NW. That's an awful lot of activity time before bed, even with a longer sleep later it's almost four hours.

Could you shoot for a 7pm bedtime?

My idea would also to shorten the activity time. My DS is also 8mo. His sleep cues aren't as easy to read as they were, plus he is now crawling all over the place , needs more rest/sleep!

I too had to break the OT cycle a few weeks ago and his NW are down to 1 (from every 2h) . When his naps were short I would bring in another one (stroller or car ride , would of course refuse a nap otherwise :) ) Bed time sometimes as early as 6h30.

Good luck!

We've been fighting for 1 month.

Now, we breastfeed 4-5 times in the day and 3 times in the night.
The last feed before bedtime is at 19:00, and put to bed at 19:15.

Other than your suggestions,
we are using the "Pantley's Gentle Removal Plan" : babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=52857.0
and I've put a very dim nightlight in the baby room.

Of course I would be much happier if he can sleep through the night.
But it's already much better then before!  :)

Thank you all for your help~

Great it's better - slowly, slowly, and any improvement is good. And that bedtime sounds much better. I hope it keeps improving!
