8 week old very restless
« on: September 25, 2008, 00:22:33 am »
Over the past few weeks, my lo has been waking around 4:30 every morning and is very restless and fidgety until his first feeding, which is usually around 6:30/7:00 a.m.  I have a hard time settling him back to sleep and so I am then up every morning at 4:30 and the days are getting longer and longer.
He is breastfed and feeds every 3 hours.  We are working on the naps, but right now, they're being interrupted by the 45 minute monster!  He goes to bed each night around 7:00 p.m. and I dream feed him at 11:00, although sometimes he actually wakes for this feeding before I get to him, maybe around 10:45 or so.  Then he usually eats again around 3:00 a.m.  At 4:30, the fun begins.  I usually just give him his paci, but he continually spits it out or it falls out and then that wakes him again.  I am trying to get away from using that, but at 4:30 a.m., I'll do anything!  I also shush him and over the past couple of nights, I have just been putting my hands on his chest and legs, holding him down a little while he jumps and if he's really worked up, I jiggle my hand a little bit on his chest and that seems to help settle him.  He does NOT like to be patted.  He often seems really gassy at this time and I don't know what to do to help with that.  It seems odd though that he would always be gassy at the same time everyday, so I don't think that's the reason for his wakings.  Any thoughts?  By the way, some mornings, he barely eats his first feed and seems completely satisfied with just a "snack."  I wonder if he even needs the 3:00 feed.  Should I be trying wake to sleep to see if he's just having habitual wakings?

Hiya

Lots of young babies start to get restless from this time in the morning.  Is he actually awake or is he sleeping/restless?  I would definately treat a 430 waking as a NW'ing and wouldn't get up with him at  this time.

I would bring the DF forward a bit, esp if he is waking for it.  Most babies do better with a DF between 10 and 1030pm as it seems to interupt sleep cycles less the earlier it is done.

Have you tried holding dummy in until he is in a deep sleep? Could he be windy from his 3am feed?  Have you tried lifting him and burping him?  Is he swaddled?  A good swaddle helped our DD stay sleeping at this time of the morning as she was notorious for restlessness at this time when she was a newborn.

No, he is definitely awake.  If I bring the DF earlier, won't that push his night time feeding earlier?  Shouldn't I be working towards pushing that later and later until he no longer needs the night feeding?  How will moving the DF affect that?

We actually stopped giving him the paci for sleeping last week because we were literally replacing it every 30 minutes, even throughout the night.  We give it to him when he's awake, if he's fussy, and sometimes at the dreaded 4:30 a.m. time, I give it to him, for my own sanity, but other than that, he doesn't use it to fall asleep.

Yes, he is swaddled tightly, even though he wants out desperately!

Hiya

with regard to the DF it is recommended that you give it as close to 10pm as possible.  The later you give it the more likely it is that it will interupt sleep cycles.  If he is waking for the DF then the recommendation is to bring it forward by 15 mins or so :)

Is he taking a full feed at 3am?  Is he falling asleep on that feed?

Actually, over the past two weeks, he only woke for the DF once and otherwise, has done well waiting for me at 11:00.

At 3:00 a.m., I usually only offer him one side because he ends up spitting up a lot and doesn't seem hungry for his 7:00 a.m. feed.

Last night, I must say, was great!  We had him sleep in his room for the first time, rather than in the bassinet next to me.  He woke for the usual 3:00 feed and then I had to wake him again at 7:00, which has not happened yet, so that was great!  I'm hoping just moving him into his own room will continue to help him sleep longer and more soundly.
