LO being sick as dropping bedtime breastfeed- please help....
« on: October 25, 2008, 18:01:29 pm »
hello
i have just dropped the bedtime feed (dropped night feed 3 months ago and dream feed only 2 months ago). My little one is 14 months and i want to stop breastfeeding now (and have been very slowly dropping feeds) i am still doing the 630am one and intend to keep this going for a couple more months, but wanted to drop the bedtime feed first. We are on 4th night now and he has been sick every night now- before I even put him in his gro bag- because he knows that it means there is no bf. He has been taking a bottle of cows milk for some time- but was always breastfed a little after...I am so distressed by this- does anyone else have any experience of their lo's being sick when dropping a feed. I know there are so many of you who do ebf- and i admire and respect you, but i really need to stop now for so many reasons. I could never go cold turkey on him- but this feels like I am, and he is so angry with me for not breastfeeding him. Will the puking continue? What should I do? It's so horrible- he literally does it as soon as I stand up from the chair after his bottle..........
can anyone tell me their stories/share any similar experiences?
thank you so much.

{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}} to you!!!  I bf for 14 mos, and weaning was much harder on me than my dd, so I don't have any experience like you do, but I feel awful for you.  Would it be possible for someone else to give the bedtime feed to him?  If he takes the bottle ok, then gets sick and upset because you won't bf him, it might help if you weren't there at all.  Is there anyone else who could give that bottle?  He may still have some rough times, but it might go easier on him if you are not in the room and are not feeding him.

yes, but only sometimes- DH not back until after he goes to bed and granny only here once a week so it has to be me........ i knew it would be hard, but didn't expect him to be sick from it. Feel terrible. I feel guilty too but I know I can't go back for so many reasons. I thought by dropping them so slowly it would be easier on him. The minute I stand up with him he does it.  I have heard of this happening, but thought it would only be the first night after it happened. I just don't know what to do. I feel like a really bad mummy.
anyway, thank you for replying- may see if granny can come down.... x

you are so not a bad mummy!!!  You're a fabulous mummy!!!  You've been bfing a long time and he has benefited so much from it.  All good things come to an end at some point.  You're just trying to do what's best for both of you.  I'm wondering if you could even get granny for a few nights in a row just to see if that would help at all.  Do you cuddle with him after the bottle at all?  If not, I'm wondering if that would help.  If you do, I'm wondering if that makes it worse.  I wish I could make this easier for both of you.  But I've got lots of {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}} to try to encourage you nonetheless.
