reaction to wheat?
« on: November 04, 2008, 17:48:53 pm »
I started Alex on mixed grain cereal three days ago. He's had it the past three mornings with apple/pear sauce, water and a bit of cinnamon. He's been having cinnamon for awhile longer so I know it's not that. Anyway, he got a red dot near his lip yesterday but nothing I was worried about. This morning though, on the fourth day his face started getting red and blotchy while eating and by the time the meal was done, it was all over his face.

He was fine otherwise... no (extra! lol) unusual crabbiness the past few days, normal bm's, no swelling, etc. So is it a reaction to the wheat still? How much do I need to worry about it? Isn't it odd it would take this many days to show up? Though it literally takes him aprox. 3 days to digest a meal due to his gastroparesis. (paralysed stomach) That's a stab in the dark though...

There are no major allergies in the family (dh and cats, that's it) Ella has no problems whatsoever and has even been tested for coeliac.

SHould I stop it and if so when could I reintroduce?

Thanks for any help!  :-*

Oh Sharon, like you need anything else to worry about.

What are the ingredients on the back on the box.  Can you list them exactly?

Sounds like a reaction to me.

Celiac Disease is completely different than an allergy to wheat. CD is an intolerance to all gluten containing products, where a Wheat allergy is only wheat and affects your immune system.

Could you post a picture by chance?

I have always been told, well with med's, that it can take 2 exposures to show an allergy.  With him though, 4 days makes since because of the way his body processes food.

I remember when Zach was a baby, he would get a red rash around his mouth only whenever I did a new food and then it went away and never came back.  But if his whole entire face is red and has welps on it, I would say deft. an allergy to something in that cereal.

Hugs, Wendy

Wheat is a difficult food to digest, especially when he has stomach issues.

I would either get a hold of some enzymes safe for infants/toddlers - usually in the form of probiotics, or hold off on the wheat until he is a bit older, most websites state 9 months to a year. And that recommendation is for babies who are NOT at risk for food allergies.  You should wait even longer if anyone in the family has food intolerances to the typical culprits - dairy, wheat, corn etc.

I forgot also that in the US, they don't recommend wheat until 1 years of age.

 :-* thanks.

I guess I was too eager.  :-[ I am so excited to have one bub who eats!  ;D I was thinking of the BLW and how there is no delay, so to speak, with wheat. I am anxious to give him some pasta, bread, etc.  :-[  He's not quite 8 months but he has been on solids since 5. He eats like the devil! 37 - 47 ounces of formula a day plus three big meals already so I am looking for more sustenance. Will live in the sticks too so not easy to find stuff other than basics, kwim?

Here's the list Wendy and thanks for being so quick in responding you two. I really appreciate it. No pic unfortunately, it's gone down and he's sleeping. I should have taken one... it was like a combination of food reaction and the weird rashes that him and Ella get when certain things "stress" them.

Organic whole oat flour
organic whole wheat flour
organic whole brown rice flour
organic barely malt syrup
dicalcium phosphate
oligofructose
inulin
electrolytic iron
niacinamide
riboflavin
thiamine mononitrate

forgot to say between 6 and 9 months here they say bread, bagels,, pasta, etc. New guidlines that suggest meat as a first food, purees aren't necessary, etc.

Could be wheat, the barley, or maybe the fructose stuff?  Meat as a first food?  Talk about a 180 from cereals.

I know, right?  ::) Iron and all that.

He's had barely okay, I never thought about the fructose though! Because he has had multigrain o's and not a rash in site  ???
