hi kirstym

i use to have TERRIBLE problems with short naps. they still happen occassionally but I am atleast getting one good nap a day, which is great for us!

When I was having problems with short naps, I was told that 30 min naps mean OT and 45 min naps can be OT or UT. Since your LO was taking great naps before and has now switched to shorter naps, I think you definitely should extend the A time, he's more than likely UT. I was told to extend the A time by 10 minutes and try that for a few days bc sometimes it takes awhile for them to adjust. If that doesn't work, maybe try extending it another 5 - 10 minutes.

I hope that helps some. I'm sure one of the moderators will be able to add some advice too! Good luck and stay postive! I know how frustrating short naps can be, but hopefully you will have it sorted out soon! :)

How have his nights been going? If he's only been getting those 2 X 45 minute naps for 3 days he's probably OT at this point. First I would shorten his A times to help him catch up on some sleep and then perhaps you can start to lengthen his A time if he needs it. Remember that after a short nap like that he will need a shorter A time, perhaps only 1.5 hours.

okay so if he is generally napping for 45 mins it means his OT and should reduce his A time?
this morning he woke me up at just after 6 he had his breakfast and milk at 6.30 and now its 7.30 and i think his tired cue is kicking in, while in his chair. if i put him up now he'll probably wake at 8.15 -8.30 but his not due his next feed til 10.30 so he'll be awake for a whole 2 hours before his next feed???

im sooooooooooo confused why is this happening

Things are going to be a bit messed up until you can get him back on track. The 45 minute nap can mean either OT or UT. It may have meant UT at first but after a few days of only 45 minute naps, he's probably OT now. You may have to do EASAE for a bit until he's back on track. Hopefully by shortening up his A times for a few days though he'll catch up on sleep and then start going longer again between naps. Also, you may want to feed him a bit earlier if you think he's going to need to go back to sleep during feeding time.

The 30 minute nap in the morning was probably OT, what time in the morning did he wake up? I'm guess the 45 minute nap was also OT since he had 3 hours A time which is pretty long after an OT nap. At least he caught up then later in the day though. See how short his A time was though, only about an hour. You just have to keep playing around with A times a bit again to find out what works best for him first thing in the morning and after a short nap. You'll think you've got it and then it will change on you again! LO's like to keep you on your toes! :)
