How do you burp your baby?
« on: December 08, 2008, 04:18:49 am »
I need a fail proof way of getting my DD to burp after feeds.

I am having a terrible time settling my LO.
She is 4 weeks and I have a full on milk supply which is causing her to gulp in lots of air which results in reflux like symptoms which interrupts sleep.

I have got lots of advice on positional feeding etc for the let down and keeping her upright for 30mins after a feed  but the biggest problem seems to be I can not get her to burp.

She must have so much gas just building up in her tummy which I can not get her to burp out.

Any fail proof ways of getting her to get the gas out?
I have tried pulling her off to burp during a feed but she just screams.....must like her food like her mum.

Sometimes we would lay our son across our knees with his tummy right in our leg. The weight on his tummy plus patting the back can help the gas escape.

Gassy babies are no fun, hope this helps!

I have exactly the same problem with my 3 w/o LO!  The advice I was given was to keep her upright after a feed / carry her in a sling (haven't tried that one yet).  I've just started trying gripe water, but it doesn't seem to be making any difference.  I've heard that you can also get over the counter medications that help bring up the wind.

I find that DD usually brings up wind easier when she is relaxed, so if I can get to her and start feeding as she wakes, rather than waiting for her to cry and get upset & flustered, she will burp better.  It's so hard seeing my precious little thing in pain and woken from her sleep  :(  I'll be watching your replies to see if there are any fail safe ways to get that wind up!!

Look at this thread http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=4859.0
Have a read of the post near the bottom by ryan's mum with the bold titles "what is colic?" and "what to do".
I know that neither of you feel your LO has colic, but some of the advice in that particular post is about burping a colicky/reflux baby and they are NOTORIOUSLY gassy babies.

This may sound odd but she started burping herself today.

I have been feeding her lying down with her lying across my chest, trying to stop the gulping from the over supply.
Doesn't seem to stop the gulping but every now and then she lets go, lifts her head up and lets out a big belch before getting back to drinking.

Unfortunatley does not seem to improve the sleeping. :'(

Hi there, my DD is 5 weeks now and i had problems with her swallowing air, and then having

pain, :( waking during naps, crying. Now i know exactly when she has gas, because she always

making this sound MMM... like it hurts, she pulls her legs up so that's what i`ve been doing:

1. When i hear air passing in her stomach i try to burp her before air went down, she burps and continuing to eat
better.

2. When she wakes up with pain i put her over my shoulder, gently trying not to wake her up  and just waiting for

air to come out. Dint hurry up, wait for it, and then gently put her down , usually she falls asleep much happier and
faster.

3. Put her  down on tummy once in a while, massage her stomach in a clockwise direction.

4. I purchased Mylicon gas relieve medication, so when she was in very bad pain and nothing helped i gave her that and she was much better.

hope it was helpfull, let me know if you need anything else.

I had similar difficulty with my son earlier on too.  When my mom came to visit, she would rock him and that would make him burp wonderfully.  Simulate a rocking chair motion and hold your baby upright with the head just over your shoulder.  I would place one hand behind his neck and hold his body with my other arm and hold him close to me.  As I would rock back and forth, he was able to burp more effectively.

If this does not work, I do not know if you have it where you are, but in Germany we have a warming oil you can rub on babies tummies to relieve gas.  That also has worked very well.

I hope this helps!

DD was the same when she was younger I had 4 different ways to burp her.

1) Over my holder. Her tummy would be directly on my sholder and I would rub her left side in an upwards motion to get the gas out

2) Over my knees. I would lay her across my lap and rub her back. This way could be messy though :)

3) Sitting up. I would support her under her chin on my knee sitting up and rub her left side till the gas came out. Sometimes just the sitting up itself would get a burp out lol

4) Massage. Baby massage worked wonders for her. We took a class and learned some great technecs.

The key to a good burp is to rub the left side upwards, since thats where their little stumic is. Try to resist patting to hard as it make more bubbles and doesn't really get a lot of the air our.
