How much did your LO sleep at 3/4 months???
« on: December 15, 2008, 08:32:02 am »
Hello everyone! I, like always am having a lot of problems figuring out my LO's A times for throughout the day. I have been able to get a consistent 1h15m-1h30m nap in the morning, but for the rest of the day we're getting 30-45 minute naps.  :P :-[

DD is getting about 14 hours of sleep in a 24 hour day, but only 3 1/2-4 hours during the day. I know it isn't the recommended amount and doesn't reflect any of the perfect routines listed on the board. So how common of a problem is this?

How much did your LO's sleep during the day??

I am of NO help because we can't seem to get our A times down either.  Yesterday the average was about 50 -60 min. I'm trying to figure out how to get her A times stretched without her getting OT because her naps are NOT consistent.  Best of luck!

Your LO is only 2 days younger than mine!!  :D :D

Figuring out the A time is a prob isn't it? I know that my LO can handle 2h10m in the morning  :o but I can not figure out what she can handle after that! I've tried from 1h20-1h40 but none of this seems right...Who knows...

How many hours does your LO sleep during the day? We cannot seem to go over 4 hours anymore-what's going on?

14 hours is completely reasonable.  I know BW indicates 15-18 hours are required for the first year or so, but many other resources (Canadian Pediatric Society, What To Expect books, Baby Center etc.) indicate 12-15 hours by three months.  If your baby is sleeping through the night (which it looks like you're getting about 10 hours at night) and is content and happy throughout the day in between naps, then your LO is getting enough sleep.

Hi Elke,

Your sleep times sound like ours.  At 4 months, DS was (mostly) doing one 90 min nap and a couple of 45-ers.  This was huge progress compared to earlier... In fact, I was delighted when DS did one 90 minute nap a day THREE DAYS IN A ROW... :P

What is your night time sleep like?  Reason I ask is that, if DS has woken up lots or earlier at night, he seems to like shorter A times in the morning.   Also A times get longer throughout the day.

I know what you mean, when DD began sleeping long in the morning I was shocked!!! Currently my Lo is having ok nights, but not compared to others' LO's this age. I stopped doing the 22:30/23 df last night because when I do do it, she wakes up 2-3 times before morning and only needs to be fed once. Last night I gave her a df at 20:30 (her bedtime is 18-18:30) and she woke at 23:30 then 03:00 and wake up at 06:30. I know it isn't ideal, but at least if I go to bed early I can actually get some sleep. She is able to go longer (about 4 1/2 hours at night), but I am really tired of re-settling her only to have a second wake up just 1 1/2 hours later and a third at around 04:00.

My DD's first A time is 2 hours-2h10m. Sometimes she only sleeps 1h15m but I don't know why, maybe she is already becoming OT? After that I am clueless, any suggestions? I wouls never have thought that the A times should increase throughout the day... Whhat were your DS's A times?

Hmm, dunno if A times should get longer as the day goes on, they just sorta do  IYSWIM.   Not by huge amounts - we're talking 10 to 15 mins.  At 4 months, DS was doing A times of 1.75ish, 2h-ish, 2h-ish, 2.25h-ish....quite a lot of "ish" - sorry.

Yup, waking up several times at night sounds familiar too.  I'm not a brilliant authority on any of this.   We're still having one NW (at anywhere between 0300-0500, up for a feed and back down).  But I can offer a sympathetic ear and some ideas to try :)

I'll be back soon.  DS is waking up as I type.

Back again!   Am I right in thinking your DD is 3 months and a bit old?    I could be horribly wrong, but looking at the night wakings after only 90 mins and 30 min afternoon naps....could it be OT?

For us what worked (ish!!) was this:  get rid of the OT.  If this means APing, then go for it.  Long car ride, stroller, whatever works to make sure DD gets a good stretch of sleep.  Then gently tweak.  Pick one A time and play with it, but gently.  So say your morning A time is usually 2h10, instead make it 1h55 and see what length nap you get.  If you get a long nap, then stick to normal A time for the next cycle.  If you get a short nap (eg 45 mins) then shorten next A time by 15 mins.  And so on.  Make sure you include in the A time the time it takes to go to sleep.

If you get a good, long nap then lots of stimulation for the next A time. Using this method, I usually (okay, often!) get at least one 90 minuter.

Wake to sleep never really worked for us - it was more like Wake Too Early.  But it might be worth a try?

No, W2S was wake 2 early for us as well and DD screams bloody murder if I try to extend any of her naps! I tend to get into these OT cyles very easily but thankfully it usually only takes a long 2 hour walk to get us out (I think... How do you know you are out?) As far as the A time goes I am seriously at a loss. 2 hours is the perfect 1st A time for DD but even 1h40 as the 2nd A time is too much. Is that really possible?
I am hoping for a good nap tomorrow (not 30m like today which turned out to be a real nightmare. 3 hours total all day and DD was a little grump!) and I'll try 1h30m. At this point I have to clock-watch because any tired signs I used to rely upon have become useless.
