Almost 7 months and still 30-45min naps
« on: December 21, 2008, 18:00:15 pm »
I am so baffled how to make my daughter sleep beyond 30-45mins.  I have 2 other kids who by 6 mo. were sleeping 1.5hrs for the a.m. and p.m. nap.  I cannot get this.  She is not over-stimulated, she is well-fed.  What am I doing wrong?!?  When does this go away?

Hi ~

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Could you post what a typical day looks like? Perhaps the routine needs a bit of tweaking. Typically a 30min nap means OT and a 45min nap means UT. However, an accumulation of UT naps will lead to an OT baby by the end of the day. So, depending on how long this has been going on, she may well be in an OT cycle.

Thanks for your reply.  A typical day:
Wake: 6:30-7:15am ish
Eat: BF 8:00am --8:30 Cereal...fruit
Activity
Sleep: 9:45-10:00am (depends when she wakes)  usually a short nap! 10:00-10:45am (won't return to sleep)
Eat: 12:00BF - followed by veggies/fruit etc.
Activity
Sleep: 1:45-2:00pm ish -- usually from 1:45-2:30pm
Eat: 3:45 BF and Cereal....
Activity
Night routines:
Sleep BF - 7:00-7:15pm ish -- till morning

She is thankfully a good night sleeper with usually only 1-2 quick wake ups.  (I don't have to feed her, she takes a soother and goes right back to sleep)

Any advice/suggestions is welcome!!!!!!

Thanks for posting your routine. After taking a look it seems that the first nap is a UT nap and the second is an OT nap. It looks like you generally aim for a 2hr 45min A time first thing. I would try 3hr A time here for a few days and see if that results in a longer nap.

Then it looks like her second A time is 3hrs. That would normally be a fine A time, however since her first nap was short, she probably needs a bit less. I would aim for about 2.25/2.5hrs here if her first nap is short. If either of these naps are short she will probably need a catnap to make it to bedtime.

That's great that she sleeps well at night. It helps to be able to "reset" to try again the next day! It may take a few days to see results. Try to stick to the revised A times for 4-5 days before changing things again. :)
