pat/shh side/tummy/back questions
« on: December 18, 2008, 05:24:07 am »
So, the pat/shh method is best when you can access the baby's back.  From the descriptions I've read, it sounds like you are placing them on an angle using a wedge of some type, and if you removed the wedge, baby would be on his/her tummy.

When I first tried pat/shh, I had DD on her side, but did not use a wedge.  I put her on her back, then lifted one side of her so she was tilted.  But if I let go, she'd be on her back.

I've found that pat/shh does work best with the wedge/tummy method.  But then I have to put DD back on her back to sleep once she is out, and that often disturbs her and I have to start all over again.

Is it okay for her to sleep in the position that she is in for shh/pat?

I have a similar question and I would be interested to see other mom's answers...I put my son on his back and then roll him to his side.  On his front side I have a towl rolled up to prevent him roll over to his tummy.  HE now even likes to curl up his upper leg and put it on the towle.  Then I can pat or back-rub him.  After he goes to sleep, I put another rolledup towle to his back to keep him on his side.  But he seems to prefer sleeping on his back, as after a while I would hear him struggle trying to push the towle on his back away.  I tried to just let him stay on side without support, or to lay him back on his back.  Both seem to wake him up.

I wonder how other moms do this...

I do pat/shhh (but mainly pat) when DS is unsettled and as he sleeps on his back, I leave him that way and usually pat his hip (the top side of the hip) so I don't need to move him, but also found that any moving annoyed him.  He would always roll back onto his back and squish my hand so not worth the wrangling.

He doesn't need much, but he mostly likes the pat part

are you maybe rolling your babies over too soon?  my ds sleeps on his back and i do the same thing (roll him to the side for sh/pat but he is basically leaning toward the back).  when i do sh/pat i have one hand on his chest and one hand patting his back.  once i am sure he is in deep sleep and won't jolt anymore i gently push him toward his back with the hand i have on his chest.  i don't usually roll him the entire way, just nudge him in that direction so that when he does move in his sleep it will be toward his back and not his tummy.  later when i check on him he has always rolled to his normal backside sleeping position.  he doesn't usually notice when i am nudging him because i wait until he is really fully in deep sleep.  this means i am sitting with him for a good 5-10 minutes after he has initially fallen asleep.  its not ideal to have to wait with him that long, but it beats accidentally waking him up and starting all over again!  hth
