Self feeding
« on: January 15, 2009, 19:13:39 pm »
Hi there
My 6.5 month DD has recently been given the Baby Mmm-Mmm rice crackers that easily dissolve when saliva hits them.  She's been feeding herself 1/2 a cracker (maybe 1 inch x 1 inch piece) for the last week or so.  I just put it on her tray and she picks it up and gnaws on it until it's gone.  I'd like to start offering her more foods to pick up and feed herself, but don't know what to offer.
Just some background: she's been on cereal since 4 months and we started veggies at 5.5 months, so over the last month we've gone through major veggies, fruits and meats.
Any suggestions?

Hi Jana,
You could use cooked sticks of vegetable eg carrot, sweet potato, broccoli and cauliflour florets. Cut them into sticks and then just cook them until they are soft. DS found sticks easier to hold onto as he could hold one end whilst nibbling on the other.
Pieces of fruit like small chunks of apple, pear, banana. These (except the banana) can be cooked too so that its nice and soft.
But ds's favourite finger food ever (even now  ::)) is toast.

HTH  :)

That's great info Chrissie.  At what point does self-feeding of finger foods replace the baby food puree meals?

Jana, have a look at this for some great ideas for finger food.  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=10.0
A very popular recipe for los venturing into finger food is  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=102407.0

This varies but you can expect the range to be from 7 mos-12 mos.  Every baby is different so just follow her lead.  Keep offering her plenty of opportunity to feed herself.  Some moms let their los start off with fingerfood and then finish them off with spoon-feeding.

Jana,
Jus wanted to say thanks for mentioning those rice crackers, I've been thinking about starting finger food with my dd but was worried that she's too young and might choke so been using Nuby Nibler to get her used to the idea but she cant swallow anything with it. Will defo try those crackers, Thanks :)

Alex liked grated cheese too.  Also raisins and soft fruits like kiwi and banana cut up small.

It is different with all babies, but my ds would happily combine finger foods and puree until he was about 11 months. After that he would refuse anything on a spoon - except yogurt  ::) - so that was when we switched to mainly finger foods. Your lo will definitely let you know when he is ready to make the switch over  ;)
