Refusing solids after a successful start to weaning
« on: January 10, 2009, 08:37:25 am »
Hi,

I started weaning DD when she was 4 1/2 months and she loved it.  She was having mashed banana and milk, fruit and rice, fruit and cereal and then veggies for her dinner.  I was preparing 2 ice cubes of purees for her and she always finished them, so I introduced veggies for lunch as well.  All going good!

She's almost 6 months now and totally refusing her lunch and she never finishes the veggies for dinner.  She more or less refused breakfast as well.  She is still taking all her bottles, but just refusing solids now.  Is this normal?  I'm really not sure how to tackle it.  Do I keep trying her every meal time?

I generally try solids 1 hour after her bottle.

I think she may be in between routines as well.

Help please!!!

Rachel

Hi
This is normal and they will go through phases of wanting and not wanting. Here's what I would do if it were my DD:

Go back to giving solids at first feed BEFORE bottle so she is hungry and has more incentive to try. Sit her on your knee so she's close to you and offer her a little bit on a spoon a couple of times. If she refuses, fine - give her the milk and try again the next day. In the meantime, keep an eye on bottle amount and possibly add an ounce here and there to ensure she is getting enough food to keep her going.

I would go back to having seperate tastes too. So just apple or pear instead of apple & pear IYKWIM?! Is the food too lumpy? Make sure it's easy for her to eat. Also, offer her a little water in between to make sure she's not thirsty.

Hope this helps
Dx

Deb has given you some great advice here.  Thanks Deb ;)

The only thing that I don't second, and is NOT supported by BW is the giving solids before milk.  Until 12 months milk is the most important component of your lo's nutrition.  Tracy says ' Until 1 solids are for fun'.

Los do tend to go off their solids sometimes.  Just keep offering like Deb suggested, and you'll see that soon enough she will get back on track.  You can also try different consistencies and different temperatures.

Is she teething maybe?

Have a look at these, and thee is more on the FAQ section of this board.

How's going? Did it work?

Charm - In the book I have from Tracy (BW Solves all your problems) she does actually recommend solids before milk.

Although milk is the mainstay, babies from 6 months do need the extra nutrients from food such as iron so some food is important. It's also important to get the kids to try as many different tastes as possible to avoid having fussy eaters later on in life. Stick at it! This is a brill stage.

Deb you are right.  I have read the section and it says 'once she gets the hang of things always give solid foods first.'  Taken from BWSAYP pg.137 in the 6-12months chart.

However, it's still important to keep in mind that milk is still the most important part of the  baby's diet.  Thus if you decide to do solids first, make sure it's just a taste, so as not to fill baby on solids.  Otherwise then you will have milk refusal.

I did milk first and solids 1hr later until K was 9 months and then changed.  She is a very good eater and is not picky at all.  I followed BWSAYP, but I also backed it up by advice from this site, as this is being updated all the time.
