Purees to level 3s or finger foods help.
« on: December 22, 2008, 00:35:46 am »
My ds is 9mos on Christmas Day. He's been doing purees well, not lots but well since 6 months. I tried a Gerber 3 meal a few weeks ago and he wasn't having any of it! He wasn't sure what to do with the pieces and gagged (and scared me!) several times. Is there something else I should give him or try again? I'm nervous about giving him chunky anything so where do I start? I'd like him to start feeding himself too, but I gave him those little puffs once and again choked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

glad to see this thread! :)
My DD will be 9 months on the 8th of January and I have been wondering when to go to stage 3 foods! She has always loved her purees, so I am hoping for a smooth transition, but scared of her choking on solids. I will be glad to see advice as well!

Gagging is very common when first introduced to finger food.  Gagging is good as it is their way of clearing their airway.  Just keep a calm face when this happens and your lo will not be turned off or afraid.  Have you checked this out?

I usually do a finger mush test with all foods when introducing finger foods the first few months.  If you can mush it between your fingers then your los will be able to mush it with their gums.  Keep the finger foods soft and tender.

Also check out the http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=10.0 for some great ideas on finger foods especially for those with few teeth.

BTW ds (18 mos) only has 8 teeth and he has been on finger foods since 7 mos.

I would also suggest mixing the stage 3 with the purees slowly, to help get them use to the texture.  Don't be scared of the gagging, very normal.  I had to start mixing mashed sweet potatoes with the puree.  First it was just one tbsp to a full 8oz jar of sweet potato, and now it's a whole bowl of mashed sweet potato to 2 tbsp of jarred puree.  I should've done this when he was younger, but I didn't and now he's older and I feel like I'm way behind.  So don't give up, keep trying.

Thanks Melanie! I was thinking about doing that. Today I tried level 3 chicken noodle dinner and he did great! SLOW but great! I tried those puffs by Gerber, but he gagged way too much. Not quite ready I guess! Thanks so much everyone!

Thanks for the advice. I guess we'll just take it slow and she'll start eating them when she's ready! :)

Funny, it seems to just happen overnight. One day Ben wasn't good with chunks then the next, they were no problem. What I did was start VERy slow by offering super small pieces of bread then building up to bigger pieces if banana ect. So far seems to have worked! Good luck JBs Mommy! Keep up up to date on your progress!

Just thougt I would update :)
JoHanna is doing much better with solids! Bensmuma, it seemed to happen overnight, just like you said! One week she wouldn't even let me feed her a small piece of banana, but this afternoon, she couldn't get enough. I also bought her the little puffs that dissolve once their in the babys mouth, and she really took to those quickly. She still can't seem to get them in her mouth on her own, but she trys really hard, so I think she'll have that down in no time too. And now, when I feed her baby food, I can hear her smooshing it up in her mouth eventhough she doesn't need to with Stage 2 foods...on to Stage 3 foods now!

Thanks again for the advice and support! :) :) :)

Glad things are getting better! FWIW, my dd hated the stage 3, but did great with "real" food.  I mentioned that to my SIL when it was hapening, and she told me her kids couldn't tolerate the chunky food either. My dd would gag on the satge 3, yet eat cheerios and pasta and banana and pancakes...things like that.  Even when she got older, sometimes I'd offer a stage 3 if we were out and about, she still hated it...lol.
