sleep cycle transitions: can at night but not through naps
« on: January 22, 2009, 01:40:12 am »
Hi i don't know if this question has already been answered but my dd is the queen of short naps.  She can go longer if she is in the car or a vibrating chair, however in her crib she wakes after 30 minutes, happy mind you but wakes none the less.  I realize that the car and chair are probably props and a big no no but not something we do all the time just depends on if we are travelling or out at someone's home.  What i want to know is, how come she can sleep all night long and go through the sleep cylces no problem but through her naps she can't?

Hi KaiArsenault,

I have been following your postings recently (my 5.5 son was a 40 minute catnapper) but sleeps 12 hours straight at night.  I really lengthend his awake times to 3 hours in order to get the 1.5-2hrs naps. I use to keep putting him down every two hours and he was tired but NOT tired enough to make it through the first sleep transition.

We still get the occasional 35-45 minute catnaps (like today) and I just accept that we don't sleep the same every day so why should I except him too. He does go down awake without any props so he does know how to fall back asleep himself. If he does a short nap I just have to think he obviously doesn't need the extra sleep today and get him up. Have you tried lengthening his awake time?

Hi there,

I read on a previous post that babies deal with learning night time sleep in the first 3 months and then learn daytime sleep from 3-6 months. I too am having problems at the moment with short naps and i going to brave wake to sleep method today for the 1st time...wish me luck.  ;)

my lo doesnt wake up happy at the end of the first sleep so i know he needs moer sleep. i dont know if i am brave enough for wake to sleep!

Hahaha, i have been promising myself i try w2s for the last 2 days but have yet to brave it. Chronic 45 minute naps are driving me mental!  ;)

I will try it sometime, I have even posted asking how others have tackled it but I just can't seem to bring myself to rouse him at 35mins when he's so sleepy but then WHAM 10 mins later he's awake and i'm telling myself i'll try it at the next nap!  ::)

If you give it a shot let me know what happens...xx
