3 week old will not nap during the day
« on: January 21, 2009, 18:17:01 pm »
My 3 week old sleeps wonderful at night, but will not nap at all during the day. At the first yawn we swaddle her and turn on the white noise and lay her down. She is sound asleep and the minute we lay her down or within 5 minutes she is wide awake. This goes on and on all day long and by 1000, she is extremely fussy and it is a viscious cycle.

We tried the shh/pat and don`t do anything stimulating. It seems as though she is super stimulated by looking at anything wherever we put her, even a wall, etc.

Please help!!!!

welcome to BW and congrats on your new bub!!  3 weeks is really, really early to have her sleeping all sorted out.  Are you establishing an EASY routine?  If so, can you post it?  A time for a bub that young is really, really short.  We found with our dd that if we waited til the first yawn to start putting her down, it was already too late.  Do you have a wind down routine?  Is she asleep when you put her in the crib?

Pat/shh is a wonderful too and does work, but it can take awhile.  We started it as soon as we came home from the hospital, and by 6 weeks, dd was doing bedtime on her own, then picked up the other naps shortly after that.  The idea is that they learn how to put themselves to sleep, so you want them to be awake when you put them down, but you are teaching them how to fall asleep on their own.

Here's a couple links that may be helpful:

we found with sophina at a few weeks old that first yawn meant she was already OT

At that age I would also do some AP to allow her to catch up on sleep so she isn't so fussy.  Swing, sling, bouncy or whatever it took.  3 weeks is really young and hard to AP.

totally agree with pps!!!  We almost always did at least the catnap any way we could - swing, car, stroller etc. just to give us  a break and get her a good nap before bedtime.
