Too much day sleep! Help!
« on: January 25, 2009, 19:18:27 pm »
We started our 7wk old on EASY this week since she had no routine at all.  The first day was horrible with her crying significantly at night, but the 2nd and 3rd days were perfect.  She ate, played, and slept more or less on the routine explained.

The 4th day (yesterday) was fine but last night she awoke for 2 hours.  We picked her up and let her cry and put her back down and eventually she fell asleep.

Today being the 5th day is where there is an issue.  She's done this prior to getting on any routine, but she's been asleep most of the day:

Awake at 8AM
Fed, played till 9AM
Fell asleep till 11AM
Fed @ 11 but immediately fell back asleep
Awoke at 2PM for 10 mins
Fell back asleep.

How can I keep her awake???  I'm not sure it's because it's a gloomy day out so there's no natural light or because she was up more last night.  Any advice is welcome, especialyl since I'm new to EASY.

We have tried talking loudly, turning the lights on, singing loudly, playing with her toys with her and nothing seems to be able to awaken her.

Oh my, for a 7 week old that is way too  much time up she is definatelty tired and need that sleep.

My daughter is 5 weeks and is barely able to be up for an hour.  You have to make sure to look at your daughter for the sleepy cues, like yawning and the 7 miles stare, don't worry too much about the clock. When she is up you count your up time from the time she wakes to eat, so lets say she is up at 7am. If she is able to be up for an hour and a half (like the book) then she should be napping at 8:30 giving her a nap of 1:30hours until her next feed at 10.

My daughter is eating at 2.5 - 3 hours interval, she can be up anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and 5 mins the max for her. We start the routine for naptime the second we see her yawn twice or the 7 miles stares. She sleeps until her next feed and sometimes we have to wake her. I only wake  her if she is reaching the 3 hour because I want to make sure she sleeps at night.

She is needing more sleep and more food during the day.

For sleep, Pu\pd is too stimulating for her age, it is designed for babies 4 months and up. You should be using the shush -pat methode, where you lay her down on her side and pat her back rythmically all the while making a SHUSHHHHH sound like water running out of the faucet (or you could have white noise machine, easier on you, if tend to get dry mouth shushing, LOL). If she doens't calm down, pick her up over your shoulder and shush pat until she calms then lay her down and continue the shush pat, when she is focus on you start to reduce the shush and then the patting. I keep my hand on her until I see her small jolt, then I stay close by for another 5 to make sure she doens't need me.

Hope this helps,

Marty

ps. If you don't have it Tracy's third book explains well how to do the shush pat. For the routine, really look for those sleepy cues and make sure to feed at least every three hours so she is full and able to sleep a great night.

Yeah but I'm curious how the night will go after all this sleep.  At this age she should be able to stay awake for about an hour including feed.

I agree with pp on everything else she said.  Especially PU/PD being too stimulating for such a young baby.  Shush/pat should do the job better.

We have great nights, two four hours stretch and one 5 hour. I think for sleep it's important to let them have the sleep time they need.

I was referring to squizy's bub's night sleep  ;D  I am sure your nights are fine as you seem to have a very good grasp of the routine.

I agree perfectly that at this age a times are minimal and good day sleep begets good night sleep.  But it seems a bit too much sleep if she feeds and falls asleep immediately, or stays awake for just 10 mins IYKWIM.  Maybe she needs more stimulation.
