Is this normal?
« on: January 27, 2009, 18:21:24 pm »
My DS is 10 1/2 months old and has been eating some finger foods for about a month or so....cereal bars in the morning, bananas, peaches, mangos, mashed sweet potatoes....lately, however he gags on many things....two nights ago we tried to give him mashed potatoes and he gagged until he threw up all over himself.  Last night, I gave him mashed sweet potatoes (he has been eating the same thing for a couple of months now) ate about 1/4 of it just fine, then started gagging and threw up again.  He really won't eat anything else except for pureed food.  He is teething right now and that's a different problem.  Could it be that he doesn't like the texture and throws up because of that??  He's not sick.  I am just curious and wondering if maybe there could be something else going on??  I've heard that some babies throw up with certain textures.  Any help is appreciated!!

It could be due to the teething, but either way it is most likely a phase. Babies and toddlers go in and out of phases with food - likes it, doesn't, likes it, doesn't. Even with texture.

Just keep offering and if you find he likes it prepared a certain way when teething, just go that route until the pain lessens. It could just hurt to chew for now and he gags as a result of that, or it may taste funny due to excess acid in the stomach during teething and excess saliva in the mouth during that time.
