Naps outside are magic!!!!
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:36:14 am »
Jus thought I'd share.... My DD is a chronical catnapper, we manage to establish good 2 hour naps every now and then but any slight change in her life (ilness or a short trip) sets her back to cat naps. We went on hols to russia a few weeks ago and with the time difference and a 4 hour night sleep due to the flight you can only immagine what she was like when we arrived in Moscow. She was impossible to settle and I tried all my usual tricks but nothing worked.
My mum suggested we put her down for a nap outside (in -10C) I thought she was mad but at that stage was willing to try anything. Worked like a charm! For the rest of our stay DD spent all her naps outside and I never seen her nap better before!!!
Now we are back home I put her out on the balcony for her naps as much as I can and I have to say she sleeps a lot longer without waking up and wakes up in a good humour. All the fresh air is good for her and has increased her appetite as well!
I'd say its a common practice in many countries but never heard of it in Ireland so thought I'd share, maybe it'll help other catnappers!

Would love to do it but we live by a fairly busy road and sirens/loud trucks etc wake him unfortunately - very light sleeper I think.
I know it's common place in Finland too to put them to sleep outside in very cold temperatures.

I've just discovered this with my lo (16wks).  He's also a chronic short napper (and nap avoider as well)...with reflux added in just to make life interesting.  He's had his longest naps ever outside, in fact, I often have to wake him after 2hrs!

Really?  Mine is opposite.  He seems to only sleep for a few minutes outside, but then he wants to look at everything like the trees and birds and stuff.  He doesn't sleep all that well inside either, but he sleeps a little better.
