making bottle at 70 degrees and how to cool down?
« on: February 19, 2009, 11:14:58 am »
Hi there,

I just started with FF and I read here on the website that you need to prepare the formula with water of 70 degrees.  On the pack of milk powder I bought, it says: "boil water and let cool down to around 40 degrees; then add powder".  Is this normal then?  I am worried that I am making it up wrongly.  What is best?

I know you have to make the milk as freshly as possible, but in case you need to store in the fridge: I would say it is safer to have made it with 70 degree water, not?

Also, do you let it cool down completely before you put it in the fridge or do you put it in when it is still a little warm?
Sandy

Hello and congrats on your lo!!  Where do you live?  I've never heard instructions like that before.  I believe people typically boil water, let it cool to room temperature, mix the formula, then refrigerate?

HTH!

Hi there some milks do state specific temps to ease mixing. What milk is it? I just always let it cool, as boiled water is sterile at any temp, so I just let the water cool, and left bottles on the side and added powder when needed. That way I could make up six bottles of boiled water and add milk powder when feed was due and then warm. X

We did what Emma did and boiled the kettle, measured out the bottles and let them cool.  We would then make the bottles up as and when we needed them.

When we switched to a reflux formula, the powder tended to disolve better in cold, so kept our bottles refrigerated.

Many people do it differently, some will boil the kettle, make the feed and then cool down under a cold tap, but it is what ever is best for you.

We used to cool bottles under running water when we made feeds up fresh. This lasted a few months then we put water in bottles and added powder when needed. Like Paula we had a reflux formula which mixed far better with cold water.

The 70 degree instruction is to kill any bacteria in the formula powder as it isn't sterile. Advice seems to really differ on making bottles. In the UK they are saying make feeds fresh each time but I read somewhere that in Ireland they say it's ok to keep feeds in the fridge if you make at 70 degrees and cool quickly then put in the fridge (not the door, must be at the back). I think the second best method is to put water in the sterile bottles and add the powder when you need it and use straight away. The UK advice is always to use freshly once boiled water, but again other countries don't seem to bother with that!

I think you have to do what is the easiest for you. We were far more fussy when he was really little and got more relaxed as he got more mobile.

Hi you all,

I live in Norway and up until now I have only found 2 brands of milk in the store!  Yep, not much choice here...    :o  I have used something called HAN, or whatever...  :-\
I think I am going to try to put the water in the bottles and add powder when needed.  Lets see if this dissolves at room temperature...

Thanks for the tips, ladies!   :-* :-* :-*
