17 week old no napping
« on: February 05, 2009, 21:40:52 pm »
Hi, I have a 17 week old dd who does not nap unless we are out in car seat or pram.  I started Easy routine about 10 days ago which is ok apart from the S part! I've tried to do a wind down routine and sh/pat, but have only got her off to sleep once and she only slept for 10 mins.  I tried to get her back off but she gets so angry so she must be over tired and then I can't get her off.  She won't have a dummy although seems to be coming round to one (but still prefers her hand) and has had quite a bad cold for a few weeks now.  She wakes twice a night on a good night and I don't feed her each time she wakes.  I manage to get her to sleep when she wakes at night but she is prefers to be asleep on me before I put her in her cot.  Todays routine below..
She is breastfed but I have been expressing milk so that she will take bottle when out and so that I can see how much milk she is having.  I know she should be fed every 4 hours but I don't feel 4 oz is enough for four hours?  I offer her more but she doesn't take it.

Wake 6.50am
E 7am Breastfed
A 7.30am
S
E 10am 4oz bottle
A 10am
S 11.15am - 1.35pm in car seat on travels
E 1.35pm 4oz bottle
A 2pm - 4pm
S 4pm - 4.10pm
E 4.10pm 4oz bottle
A 4.25pm
S 5pm in car seat - 5.30pm
E 5.30pm 3oz bottle
A 5.45pm - 6.30
S
E 6.30pm breastfed
A 6.30 - 7.30
S
E 7.30pm breastfed
S 8pm bed

I think maybe I have trouble noticing when she is tired so therefore I miss her cue for sleep and then have trouble getting her there?

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks x

How long after waking are you attempting to give her her nap? How are you trying to settle her to sleep? When she wakes after a short nap, is she happy and chatty, or crying?

She definitely sounds Overtired. If she won't take a dummy, I wouldn't press it on her at this point; if she can use her hand, that's great.

Don't rely on a yield as a guide to how much milk you are producing - your daughter is WAY more effective than any breast pump, so you can be assured she is taking much more than 4 ounces at a feed.

Sorry for all the questions ... :)

Hi mand, If she is fed every 4 hrs then the amount should be 6oz milk (or there abouts) 4oz is for a 3hr routine :)

Last night dd woke so many times I lost count, at one point was up with her for over an hour trying to get her to sleep, eventually she went off.  This morning fed her at 7am and then at 8am took her up to her room for wind down, tried sh/pat but she just doesn't seem to like it.  Then tried pu/pd for about 40 mins and she was still fighting it.  In the end I gave up because she was due another feed.  Fed her at 10am and started wind down at 10.30 because though she must be very tired.  Eventually got her off to sleep after 20 mins and was very pleased.... then she woke up after 25 mins and wasn't happy so I tried to get her back off to sleep, after 30 mins I gave up as had to get out to take son to pre school.  She slept in car seat for about 10 mins whilst out then came home and gave her 1pm feed.  Had to pop out and she slept in car seat for 30 mins and that is all she has had today.  I fed her at 4pm then at 4.45 took her up for wind down and she is still awake now.  I suppose I will just have to keep trying, she has cold etc so I'm wondering if this has something to do with it?  I dont' feel I can move her to 4 hour routine till she is drinking more milk, she struggles with the 4oz at times.  Each time she woke today she was crying so I know she is tired.
