Prefers finger food to mixed meals??
« on: February 15, 2009, 19:59:55 pm »
My dd is 9mths and we started weaning at 4mths. I was quite ok with that as ds did well on solids from that age. She prefers finger foods like toast, cheese cubes, fruit to mashed food. Ive tried to just give her bits like carrots and peas but she's not interested in eating it. She's just amused by it and plays with it! So she dont really eat nothing. When I make food like pasta, she'll eat a few spoons and then just shut her lips tight, as if she doesnt want the bits. She'll eat smooth food tho! Is it ok if she eats smooth foods/meals but has fingerfood snax inbetween?? She can chew quite well and hardly gags anymore. Could I leave mashed foods for a bit later??

I think that's totally fine!  In BWSAYP, Tracy mentions offering bits at the beginning of the meal and giving her a chance to experiment with it, then going on to feeding purees as the bulk of the meal.  Eventually she'll eat more of the appetizers.  :)

I'm a little confused by your distinction between "finger foods" and "bits/mashed" food?  Are the bit/mashed food things that you're offering ona  spoon or giving her to pick up?

The bits are what I feed her on a spoon, just mashed or mouli so not that smooth. She has snaxs like french toast, toast, cheesepuffs, biscuits, cheese etc. Yeh, I thats a good idea. I will give her cut up pieces while feeding her mashed/smooth as bulk of meal. She's so much harder then ds lol.

Well, i went to read it and its basically what I am doing lol. I just let her decide what she wants. She had some butternut squash and avocado that i just mashed with a fork, but she prefered the bits of toast from the afternoon that was on the table lol. So I let her eat them as she wasnt much interested in the food I made. She just not that interested in trying them. Cut up some cooked beetroot (thought she'd eat it as its quite sweetish) but she didnt want it, I actually popped a piece in her mouth with the idea once she tastes its sweet she might like it, but nope. Then this pm I cut up some strawberries, she had one piece and just found something else interesting instead. I think I'll just try different but up food and let her choose what she likes. I suppose she'll take interest once she's ready. Someone I know told me their daughter only started solids after 10mths as they had the same problem. I am not too worried about her not learning to chew as she loves to chew things and foods and is pretty good at it. Its just coz ds was so good at it that it seems like I am failing at this.

Definitely try to relax, keep offering, and trust that when she needs the food she'll have good things to choose from and it will fall into place.  Sounds like you're doing great. :)
