Help my friend move her DS 12pm bedtime!
« on: March 15, 2009, 16:34:11 pm »
My friend wants to know where to start.  Her DS wakes in the morning around 9:30/10 am. Has a nap at 1 and then again around 6:30/7 and goes to sleep somewhere around 12.  Both his naps are around 1.5 hours.

If she wants to move his bedtime earlier, where should she start?? Should she start moving bedtime up slowly 15 mins a day til she gets to 10pm or earlier?? I thought she should make his bedtime around that second nap time but I'm no expert. Please help.

If he's waking between 9:30 and 10, then 10 pm is probably an appropriate bedtime for him, so if she wants him to go to bed even earlier than that, she'll need to wake him up earlier in the morning.  If she's ok with a 10pm bedtime, then yes, I'd start by moving his bedtime earlier and cutting that 2nd nap short.  I'd approach it like the 2 to 1 nap switch - lengthen his first A time before his nap, let him sleep for that, cut that 2nd nap to just a catnap (30-45 min) and put him to bed earlier.  So if you want to do it gradually, I'd lengthen A time 15 min before that first nap, then cut the 2nd nap by 15 min and move bedtime earlier by 15 min.  I'd do that every 3-5 days til he's where she wants him to be with bedtime.  But if she wants bedtime earlier than 10, I'd also start waking him up earlier.
