sleep during day for 4-week old - so confused!
« on: March 13, 2009, 12:59:31 pm »
hi - My 4 week old baby is having problems sleeping during the day...he is just so alert - just wondered if anyone had any advice - here's a prime example of what happens...

E: 10am - feed
10.20 - wind/burp (keeping him upright for as long as poss as he has bad wind and reflux)
A: 10.30 - change/
S: ???? 10.45 - he yawns, stares etc...i swaddle him, shh him, cuddle him for bit and then put him down...but he is SO wide awake - eyes staring everywhere etc - i continue to sssh pat for ages, but to no avail! he starts off doing little shouts every now and again, which i leave, but they develop into wails, so i pick him up - he is STILL looking around - when i try and cover his eyes or hold him close to me he gets so cross. when i leave him in he basket, he is ok for a while, but the shouts start again...i also tried a paci, which he sometimes likes, but to no avail...

eventually, at 12.15 - still awake, i realise he is doing a hungry cry..so, I feed him....and then he drops off on the boob after 15 minutes and i put him down without a bother - and he is still sound asleep half an hour later...

am i missing a trick?
i don't want him to have to fall asleep straight after feeding as eventually want him to be able to go to sleep on his own (which he does sometimes) but the thought of changing him after the last feed - which i know would wake him up - isnt a good thought! i need some time to eat!

any advice from some experienced mums would be much appreciated - this is my first, so just feeling my way really.
Thanks
x

has anyone got any suggestions -he hasn't slept all day now! he is still staring around wherever i put him - in his basket, in his bouncy chair, in the baby bjorn - i've fed him more and changed him, but no joy! he is intermittently grunting/crying/screamimg and i know he must be tired! i'm desperate as i think this could become an every day thing...any advice would be much appreciated.
thanks x

Are you putting him down in his cot in a dark quiet room?  You need to avoid all stimuli if he is so alert.

The other thing I am thinking of is he might need a slightly longer a time.

Are you using shush/pat to help him to sleep?

hi - yes, i did think of that - it's hard during the day, but I did cover his moses basket with a scarf so he can't see anything in the room, but he just stares at the side of the basket! i think you might be right about slightly more A time, but i was going by his yawns and staring eyes...when is the ideal time to put him in the basket? if he's not a bit dozy, he just lies there wide-eyed and it's only a matter of time before he cries...and yes, i am trying shush pat - i did it for ages this morning and it worked for a bit...but not for long...
anyway, by the time he woke up after my shush patting for about 25 mins this morning, i had missed my window and he became SO overtired...we've only just managed to get him down, and it's 10pm!!! (and that involved a 45-minute car journey..)
Any more advice would be great! THANKS

I went through about 3 weeks of no daytime sleep too!  What worked for me was a naptime routine.  After the second or third yawn I bring ds upstairs and turn his fan on to high.  I lay him on floor or change table and swaddle him then we slow dance in front of the fan for 1-2 min and I hold his head into my body (he's not very cuddly).  After I see him yawn or eyes drooping I bring to crib and lay on his side/tummy for the shh/pat routine.  The trick for me is to put a blanket over his whole head and have an opening where I can see his face during the shh/pat.  I found if the blanket (folded up receiving blanket or a cloth flat diaper) was close enough to his eyes and touching the back of his head it gave him some comfort.  At first shh/patt took me 45 min but now it ranges from 5-10 and the odd time only 1 or 2 min.  Once he's in a deep sleep I remove the blanket and tip him onto his back, usually 20 min past the 2 jolts.  Sometimes I have to pat him until these jolts but ususally he can make it through them on his own now.  It was hard work for the first week but nothing else worked for my ds.  He never did like to be rocked or nursed to sleep so I was very happy I perservered with the shh/pat.  It was like he was waiting for me to learn how to put him to sleep!

You might need to experiment a bit with a times.  Some babies are ready to sleep after they yawn.  Some need to be already in the cot when they yawn.  Some babies have loner sleep windows, others have sleep windows that last 5 secs.  Have you tried to do the temperament test?

Different babies have different personalities.  It is sometimes helpful in knowing what "type" your baby is when trying to figure out things like a times & naps.
