14 week twin girls night wakings
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:03:11 am »
Looking for some advice as to best way to treat night wakings.
We have two girls 14 weeks born 38 weeks now around 11- 12 lbs. We started BW EASY routine through day about 1 week ago before this were just doing 3 hr feeding and naps when needed their natural routine was pretty much BW. Since 10 weeks have had bedtime routine and sleep in own cots with DF at 11. They are breast/bottle fed. Until last week they were having a bottle feed around 2-3.30 am and always waking 5-5.30 am at this time i always breast fed in bed in their room and ended up falling asleep with them on me until as late as 8. Now we have stopped this we are getting waking as previously at 2-3.30am they take a bottle usually moderate amount 75-120 mls (max take through day 120-130) and in last 2 nights have been unsettled waking on and off till 5 ish, then both wide awake. Usually can shush florence back to sleep until 6-6.30 but martha cries and twice has had bottle feed takes smallish feed 75 mls then back to sleep but still awake 6-6.30.
When they wake early e.g 6.30 have started day but tried to feed at 7/10/1/4/7 so have small A before E .... if I try and feed immeaditely often not really interested as have fed through night in marthas case and try and keep them both in sync.
Routin usually roughly
E 7-7.30 am (BF)
A
N if awake since 6-6.60 often 745- 8
awake again around 9.30
E 10-10.30 (BF)
A
S 11-11.15
awake again around 12.30 12.45 or if out often sleep until feed
E 1-1.30 pm
A
S 2-3.30-3.45
E 4-4.30
A
S somewhere between 5-6 often hard to settle as get OT
A bath 6.15 often crying ++ by this time sometimes settle quickly with bottle before 7 sometimes one or other takes longer normally always sleep before 7.30
DF bottle @ 11 straight back down
wake 2-3.30 (once as late as 4) then unsetlled really till morning.. sleep on and off after shush pat/dummies.

Questions are many... is it ok to have some A time before Eating if start day at 6 am with E not sure how the rest of the day will be ?
Napping in swings downstairs as often I am alone in day and they settle quickly this way... not wishing to address this as yet but know I will have too
Should we still be feeding X 2 through night or trying to wait till morning ?
Wondered if not getting enough through day as BF very quickly but tried expressing always have xtra milk and refuse top ups through the day.
Also how long after withdrawal of breast/sleeping with me should they start to adjust.
My other concern is starting the day OT so are they sleeping too much through day ? very sleepy after 1 1/4-1 1/2 hrs in morning but within < 1 hr by evening..... had gina ford book bought for me and advised max sleep at this age through day 3 hrs ! wondering if need to reduce day time sleeps to get longer at night ....
Luckily my hubby has been of work so far as had an operation just before they were born but he returns in 2 weeks and is not keen to be up between 3am and morning...... HELP really tempted to go back to letting them sleep on me although I know this is bad and they are now too big (this helped me through the early weeks of constant BF through)

Hi and welcome! I noticed your post hasn't been answered yet. I'm finding I need glasses now at the puter and I don't have them, but a couple things jumped out at me and I'll try to get my thoughts down before my other kid wakes and demands breakfast. :)

At 14 weeks, it looks like you're still on a 3-hour EASY. Now you can start working your way to a 3.5-hour and then by 4 months (give or take, these things just don't end up being precise ;D) you'd be on about a 4-hour EASY. The A time will gradually increase, they'll be able to go longer between feeds, and they'll be able to take bigger feeds.

And yes, you can shuffle the A and E around a bit. When Josie was doing 45-minute naps, the only way I could get her thru the day without us all going mad was to let her nap 4-6 times a day, and this was around 3 months, so about the same age. We didn't have an EASY routine till Tracy got the short naps sorted.

I'm being paged so gotta wrap up. There is also a Multiples board here if you haven't come across it yet. A few BW's have multiples and you're sure to get some great advice. :)
