introducing a sippy cup
« on: March 25, 2009, 18:45:33 pm »
How long should I continue to try to get my lo interested in one type of sippy cup before switching to a different one?  I have tried giving him a sippy every day for the last few weeks, but he hasn't even figured out that there is anything in it.  He has never actually sucked on it, just chews it.  I am currently giving him the Avent training cup.  Should I try a different kind or is this par for the course?  I can't remember what it was like with my oldest, but then again, he was a much easier baby than my youngest.

After a few weeks as you say of offering I'd be tempted to buy another one to try. He will get the idea soon enough though.

My DD chewed on her first one, it had a hard spout and she used it as a teether. So when DS came along I tried him on the soft spout one that DD loved so much and he worked out after a few times of me tipping it up a little when he was sucking on the end that water came out.

Thanks.  I'll look into a new kind, but if he does the same thing, we'll just keep trying until he figures it out.

I always found some sippy cups really hard to use... i could work it out myself, never mind my lo!!  I tried loads with ds and then resorted to the free flow variety.  Tommee Tippee do a really basic one that's mega cheap and did the job for us!

I've been hearing a lot about the tommee tippee cups.  Are they available in stores or just online?  I live in the US.

I tried a Nuby cup (soft spout) and a Gerber cup (hard spout).  DS likes the Nuby better.  He chewed on it as well, but as he did liquid would come out so he figured out what the cup was for fairly easily.  I just kept putting it on his highchair tray and one day I turned around and he was holding it and drinking out of it....
I guess they figure it out in their own time!

Nuby is good too, just anything that you can tip up and water comes out easily.  The Tommee tippee ones are widely available here in the uk.

I tried a whole bunch with her the born free, gerber, playtex and even heinz.  I found that the nuby soft spout has been by far the best.  I just kept offering it to her and then one day she was drinking from it.  Just have it available for your lo at every meal and he will eventually get it.
