do your babies also do this?
« on: March 19, 2009, 18:41:07 pm »
When my 7.5 wo dd is calm and falling asleep, she closes her eyes for a few minutes and it looks like she is going to sleep. Then, she almost acts as though she's possessed. She opens her eyes, then starts looking around (but obviously is still asleep) and wiggling (not a jolt) around a lot! It lasts for less than a minute but if I don't do the right rocking or patting (i am new to bw) then she wakes up. Otherwise she closes her eyes again. She may open them again a few times but goes back to sleep.

My question is, is this part of a normal sleep cycle? I've read the posts and faqs about the sleep cycle and didn't read about anything like this. What do other parents do to help their lo not wake up during this part?

It does sound like her own version of the "jolts" - a partial rousing-up in transition from early light sleep into a heavier stage.  Generally if these transitions wake them, it is an indication they may be OT.  Maybe start getting her ready for sleep a bit earlier, shortening the A time, and have a bit more nap ritual to help her relax?  She's a bit old for swaddling, but does she have a lovey to hold?

Is she 7.5 weeks old or 7.5 months old?

If she is 7.5 weeks old, then I would try swaddling.  It can help her get through the jolts.  ;)

When you are starting sleep training, it may take you 30-40 min of shpat for your lo to fall into deep sleep.  As your lo gets older, she will get better at it, so you will have to do shpat for less time until you don't do it at all!!  ::) http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=26672.0

I agree with pp.  Try to have a wind down routine for your naps.  This really helps bubs relax and get ready for the nap!

Sorry, at 7.5 wo is certainly NOT too old for swaddling! My bad.  Yes swaddling should help a lot!

sorry for the delay. I did read the replies earlier but didn't have any hands free to post a thanks. this info was so helpful. My LO is definitely overstimulated. I noticed that she only does this behavior if she's been awake for a while. Another question, do I start the awake time from when she wakes to feed? And at 8 weeks is it still normal for her to want to sleep soon after the feed (she falls asleep at the breast but usually wakes up for the diaper change. Then I look for yawns after that, which sometimes come rather quickly!)

Awake time starts the moment they open their eyes.  At this young age especially it is important to know exactly when they wake because their A time is soooo short, calculating A time incorrectly will lead to WAY overtired bubs.

And absolutely normal for them to want to fall asleep soon after the feed.  That shows you that she really can't handle much A time right now.  She may also be going thru a growth spurt which can also make them sleepier than normal. So use the BW A times as a guideline, but really really watch those sleepy cues.  That first yawn is her signal that it is time to start wind down!

I often felt like all I did was unswaddle bub for 5 minutes just to swaddle him again for sleep at this age! My DH worried that our poor son would grow up with shrivelled arms because he never seemed to be out of the swaddle those first 3 months.  But don't worry -- A time will increase soon enough and then you'll be wondering how the heck you're supposed to fill 3 hours of A time!  ;D
