Formula Feed Before Bed?
« on: March 26, 2009, 21:03:38 pm »
Hi everyone,
My son is 6 weeks old.  So far, we have been exclusively breastfeeding and his feeding is going well.  He was 9lb 6oz at birth and I would estimate that today he is about 11lb 8oz so he is gaining well.  He usually goes down to sleep around 8pm and will wake at 12am, 3am, and 6am to feed.  We have had a few nights where he would go for a 5 hour stretch but not consistently.

I have a lot of friends that supplement with formula and they say they noticed that their babies sleep a lot better.  We are thinking of giving my son a bottle of formula at his last feeding before bed to see if that helps him sleep longer at night.  Has anyone had any success using formula to improve sleep?  Are their any drawbacks I should be aware of?

Personal choice... i'm not convinced myself that it works.  Do you swaddle??  What does your day look like?  Bedtime routine?  How does your baby fall asleep?

Are you sure he's hungry at each of those feeding times? Also, have you ever tried a DF around 10:30 to see if he'd sleep longer? I agree with PP about it being a personal choice. Absolutely nothing wrong with formula (DD is formula fed) and if you want to give it a try go for it. It may or may not work. :)

Ive done the dreamfeed as a formula bottle for about 5 months now. The main reason was so that i knew exactly how much DS was taking and had more control i guess. It's so hard to know exactly what their intake is when bfing. However with my lo i dont think the formula does any more to help him sleep - he still wakes up around 2 or 3am for a feed. Ive also tried expressing and giving a bottle of bm but i dont notice any difference. All babies are different though... HTH
