using a dummy to extend?
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:34:43 am »
hello everyone, catherine is 16w tomorrow and is at the short napping stage which is driving me insane. she can self-soothe herself to sleep by 'singing', but always wakes after 33 minutes (yes , exactlt the same every time!) and no amount of s/p,  rocking etc will get her back off. the only way she'll go abck to sleep is with a dummy. is this ok? Husband says i should 'just leave her' but that's easy to say when you're not around an overtired baby for the rest of the day right!
thanks all
anna :)

You certainly wouldn't be the first person to use a paci to extend naps, BUT if you decide to do that you should be prepared that the paci will become a prop and then you will have a new problem.

I use a paci to extend naps.  My LO does the same.  If he wakes, I wait for a bit but always end up going in and giving him his paci and he instantly falls asleep.  It will get better once they can replug thenselves.  I did the same with my first and she had her's until she was 2 years and did not have that much of a hard time getting rid of it.

I use the paci too.  A friend of mine use the paci with a clip and string and as her dds got a little old she taught them how to find the paci by grabbing the string so they could replug in the middle of the night and at naps.  She said it was a lifesaver b/c her girls were never good sleepers in the beginning and needed the paci.  I can't wait til I can do the same with my dd so I don't have to keep going in to replug to extend.  If I swaddle her good with the swaddle close to her mouth with her paci in it sometimes stays and I don't have to replug as often.  Usually only once a night, or once a nap.
