Melatonin for toddlers?
« on: May 31, 2009, 13:29:10 pm »
My ped suggested a short course (less than a week) of 1mg of melatonin at night for dd2 to get her clocks back on track. She's a great day sleeper and not so great night sleeper. We've been adjusting her sleep through another post in this forum but just wanted to ask if anyone has heard of melatonin for toddlers or tried it themselves. Thanks!

My daughter (4) is on 3mg of Melatonin. She has bad insomnia due to some health issues... regardless it works fantastically for her. We give it about 20 minutes before bed. Though it just helps her get to sleep and while her overnight sleep is a bit better, she doesn't always sleep through and she is still a very early riser! :)

From my understanding it is very very safe. Ella sees many doctors and they are all good with it. Her Biochemical Doctor said that when they do sleep studies, regardless of the results it is usually the first line of defense, so to speak.

I tried the drops one day when Leorah was very, very OT and they were fab! She still cried out a few times during the early evening but was at least not wired for hours after bed like she can be, I love knowing that if things escalate out of control I have something to help.

Where do you guys buy the melatonin from? Health food shops? Or is it prescription medication?

A boy in my class was prescribed it and worked wonders with him.  Didn't always sleep through though but did help settle him and get him in to a good routine.

Melatonin has to be prescribed in UK as far as i know.  The parents of the boy in my class had to get a referral from their GP to a child  psychiatrist to get a prescription for it.

yep- I used it on Nick after his hospitalizations to help reset his clock. His MD okayed it for us, gave the dose of 1.5 mg crushed in applesauce 30 mins prior to bedtime for no more than 3 days in a row. (you don't want your body to stop producing enough on its own).
Works like a charm with no side effects/interactions.
We got it in the US at the drug store in the aisle with the dietary supplements. I used some myself twice with good results.
