Light sleeping?
« on: May 26, 2009, 20:37:26 pm »
DS is 11 months and in the last few weeks has suddenly become a very very light sleeper.  He was always a light sleeper before but I could go and tuck him in and move him around at night time without him waking, now he wakes if I just touch him.  Any thoughts why this might be....could it be UT?

Thanks in advance!

Very interesting question!  My dd is also an extremely light sleeper.  We used to vacuum around her cot when she was a newborn but it was short lived.  My friends say that she is such a light sleeper because I let her sleep in silence and tip toe around the house while she naps.  But even if she's having a nap in the pushchair or car seat (so it's not silent) I cannot move her.  Or transfer her from pushchair to cot etc.  She even wakes up as soon as we get home.  Do you think she is a light sleeper by nature or by making?  ;D

I agree with charmie in a way. I think when you minimize noise they get use to the quietness. But then again, my dd use to nap in the lounge when when she was little till around 4mths, and my older ds use to make noise and the tv would be on. I started letting her nap in her cot and eversince then, she wouldnt want to sleep anywhere else but there.

My ds is sensitive to sound and light and also wakes up for anything, but he was like that since birth. He is a bit better now as we use white noise and my dd and ds are both in the same room and dont tend to be bothered by each others noises.

With ds, we always kept it quiet around him and when he was a baby, he use to wake up for absolutely any little noise. But with dd, I prefered a bit of noise around her which seemed to make a difference. But both of them use to be woken by us when they shared our room! As soon as we moved ds to his own room, he slept right through the very first night; first time he did that for 16mths! I think it depends on the nature of your child. You might just be catching him when he is a light phase of sleep as they tend to wake up easy when in a light sleep.

He probably is a light sleeper by making BUT it's like this very very light sleeping has come out of no where...  He will sleep in the buggy or in the car and he's been in and out of hospital and has slept there....

I just find it odd that this seems to have suddenly started.  DS will have white noise on in the background as well if he's OT so I'm not sure!

Any other thoughts or what I can do to combat it?

Adding that can also be he is starting seperation anxiety. Maybe he is 'keeping an ear out' to know that you are around. Its like when you first move them to their room and you cant sleep deep coz you keep listening out for them, if you know what i mean. Or maybe its just developmental. They change their sleeping habits alot during their first year so could just now be that its how he is developing. There are so many things that can be causing this. I find that ds and dd slept bad and woke up for nothing while they had a milestone coming up. Is he starting to walk or anything like that? Kids are mindboggling arent they lol?

DD is also an extremely light sleeper - always has been, and from the start I kept the radio on etc to have background noise in order to not have any disturbance problems ::) I have NEVER been able to open her door and tiptoe over to her cot to check on her when I go to bed (have got used to this now, but still gives me shivers when I think "what if something happens in the night ..." and I won't find out til morning), but every so often I try, and as the dorr handle goes down I can hear a sudden rapid sucking on her dummy, and if I then go over to her, she rolls over and sits up and starts chattering for the best part of an hour til she falls back to sleep, so I hate having to disturb her sleep. Thunder storms don't wake her tho ???

We had white noise and/or/ her cd playing at nap times (not bedtimes tho) to block out daytime noise from outside, and suddenly around 10-11mths old we had to stop both as it used to bother her and she'd never sleep deep enough to go into her 2nd sleep cycle. She now has 4 songs on her cd for nap, but then it stops (it used to be set to repeat).

Sorry, not much help, but DD grew out of her NWs from her learning to walk stage by herself (it went on for a good 6-8weeks tho) and now is great. Hugs.

p.s. I'm and extremely light sleeper too, so it could also be genetic ???

I would then probably think it could be a milestone thing. It will probably last for a while until he has mastered walking and his brain stops working at it while is sleeping. I am sure then it will probably pass again. I know what you mean! I havent caught up on sleep since the day he was born coz we were awake for 25 hours by the time he decided to come! And till today he is a terrible sleeper! We're all walking zombies!

Jellybabe - I can sympathise with the long labour - mine started tues morn and he arrived thrus afternoon!!  I also had bad problems with my sacro illiac joints (pelvis joints) and could barely sleep for months before he came....now I'm just stressed from lack of sleep.  It's a killer isn't it!!
