What time should I put him to bed?
« on: July 03, 2009, 09:52:36 am »
I've usually been starting the bath, bottle bed routine at 6pm. On a good night he's asleep by about 7-7.30pm. I then DF between 10-10.30 and he usually wakes about 2.30-3 for a feed. He's been waking at about 6-6.30 in the morning but I'd rather get that extra bit of sleep and for him to wake nearer to 7.

So I'm thinking whether to put him to bed a bit later in the hope that he lies in for longer in the morning. Do you think this would work? Or is there anything else I can do?

From personal experience putting them to bed later does not make them sleep in longer....I wish it did! I too need advice on this! Maybe try an 8pm bedtime and see what happens.

You don't say how old your LO is, but sometimes an earlier bedtime can actually mean they sleep longer.

My lo is 12 weeks old. I don't think the light mornings really help. He has blackout blinds but there's still chinks of light around the sides, maybe that's something I need to work on.

I have found with my LO that if he goes to bed later than 6.45 then he wakes up MORE during the night. It has taken me ages to figure this out.

I used to put him to bed 3 hrs after he woke up from his afternoon nap but since returning to work (i finish at 6) I have discovered that the sooner I get him into bed the better. I aim for about 6.35 - 6.40 and he goes to sleep straight away, any later and it's a nightmare trying to get him to sleep. He normally sleeps till about 2am, then through to about 7.30 and he still has 2 x 1.5 - 2 hr day sleeps.

Do you think I should get him to bed between 6.30-7.00, drop the DF and just see what time he wakes?

An early bedtime sounds great, but I would keep the dreamfeed - why do you want to drop it?

I think the DF disturbs his sleep. He's got a very strong startle reflex and as soon as I enter the room his arms fly up in the air. It's very hard doing the actual DF without him waking up. Although if he does wake it's pretty easy to get him back to sleep as he's so tired anyway.
With this in mind do you think I should stick with the DF?

Do you think he'd wake hungry later if you don't do a DF? I think we did one until about 16 weeks old....but if your lo would sleep until your usual feeding time then you could try it.

It's worth a try - I guess the thing is whether it will leave you with one extra night waking or not.

So I tried it and he woke at about 12 then 4 then the usual time of 6-6.30.
I'll stick with it as I'd rather just have to wake the once in the night rather than twice!
Thanks. xx
