Falling asleep sitting up/weird sleep positions
« on: July 06, 2009, 03:30:22 am »
Hey there!

I need help!  My previously "easy" baby is having trouble getting to sleep... she just learned to stand in the crib, so it's a new trick for her.  I've been waiting it out to see if she'll lie down on her own, and she does eventually go to sleep, but the problem is, she isn't lying down!  She'll fall asleep sitting up and end up slumped over against the bumper pads, or folded in half with her head on her legs.  Tonight, I went in and she was folded in half with her head buried in the corner of the crib in the bumper pads... anyway, she'll fall asleep this way and then wake 30 minutes later because she's uncomfortable.

Anyway, how do I get her to lie down?  How long is this going to last?  What should I do?  I'm so stinking TIRED because we're waking up all night!  And she is exhausted because she's had no naps and bad sleep at night.

Also, should I remove the bumper pads?  I'm worried she's going to hit her head if I do, but my husband is worried that she's going to smother herself falling asleep sitting up with her face buried like that.  Thoughts/advice?

My lo has just leanred to sit up in the crib - he tends to go back down again but fall asleep on his hands and knees.

I have a video monitor and while he does wake up again, he then shifts about and sortc himself out again.

If it is a REALLY silly position I go in and fix him, but otherwise I leave him as he kind of needs to learn how to sort himself out.

I  often fix him before going to bed myself - anything for an easy life  ;).

Waste of time half the time though as he's upside down again by the morning. Goodness knows what he does all night in there.

Hey my dd is the same at the moment and if she falls asleep in an uncomfortable position she wakes up after a while. So now during her awake time I take her up to her crib to play, and when she sits up or stands up I show her how to get back down on her own. Been doing this for about 5 days now and she seems to be waking up a lot less.

I still have the bumpers on, as she has fallen in her crib a few times so far.

And she sleeps in a sleeping bag and this seems to restrict her movement a bit.

Hope this helps

Hey all!  Thanks for the input... I haven't tried going in and lying her down once she's asleep yet, but today, I stumbled onto a little "trick"... as long as it doesn't turn into a prop, we'll be okay.  I hope I'm doing the right thing, but what I did was I held her until she was calm, laid her down, and put my hand on her chest and sang to her until she started zoning out.  I left the room while she was still awake but on her way out.  It worked today... we actually got a 2 1/2 hour nap out of it this afternoon, and no tears at bedtime!

If she wakes up and stands in the middle of the night, well... I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

As far as the bumpers go... I'm still torn:  if I take them out, I'm afraid she'll get her arms and legs stuck in the bars.  There's always something, huh?

Why don't u cover ur face with her bumper and see if u can breathe? Sounds silly I know but I checked my ones like that. Now I have a piece of mind knowing that if she falls asleep with her face in it she can still breathe as they are fairly thin.
