16 week old will only feed when very sleepy
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:17:43 am »
My ds has silent reflux (we think) and is a very fussy sleeper and feeder.

Bottles can take upto an hour, and we usually have to give him his milk to two goes as he wriggles, cries and arches his back so much that it becomes impossible to feed him.

When he is getting round to nap time tho, he takes all of his milk no problem and I am wondering if this is because of the reflux or because of something else?

Because of this - we are obviously feeding him to sleep almost every time....eek. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks Sarah

Refluxers generally feed better when they are sleepy as they are more relaxed and I think too tired to object. My DD has started on a reflux formula which is helping, her feeds are a lot calmer and less fussy (well apart from a bad day today ::))

If you suspect reflux I would see your Dr for advice there is plenty they can do to help - where are you? In the UK the first call is usually infant gaviscon, we find the formula better, then a med like Ranitidine (Zantac) if that doesn't work.

Have you tried different bottles and teat sizes too as that can make a difference. Have a look at the reflux boards there is a lot of info there and ways to help your DS at home.

I could have exactly written your post, my 17wk old is the same although I'm not sure if it's reflux with him. You aren't alone, it's v.frustrating isn't it? The only thing I do is make sure I rouse him enough to be sleepy but awake when I put him down so he isn't actually asleep and does self settle.

I agree with Laura, if you do suspect reflux, definitely make an appointment with the GP.

My DD had silent reflux, and we tried the gaviscon which just constipated her, and from there we went onto the Reflux Formula (Enfamil AR).  We have not looked back since.  She is still on it now, as she cannot tolerate normal milk before bed.

Keep us posted on how you are doing.
